myself and a friend have been wanting a gun & punt for a while now ... after searching and asking around for over a year , i found us one, we have been speaking to the gentleman who owned it for a few weeks now about buying it... well on Thursday a deal was done and we now have ourselves a single punt & gun .. we originally wanted a double so we could both share the work load while out ...but it's a start for us ... it needs plenty of TLC as you can see from the photo's .....there's 1 or 2 things we want to change but want to keep it as originally as possible ...

it is fitted for a sail and a outboard ..

we have the history for both punt & gun ie who built it and also who designed it ... which makes it more satisfying knowing the history ....it has not been used for around 15 years and has been stood outside ...

the gun is proofed for 10 ounces not big i know but we are happy with it .

we will keep you updated with progress ....

a few photo's we hope you enjoy ...

Nice one! Your going to have a lot of fun restoring and using that! What material is the punt made from and what size is the gun? 1" or 1 1/4"

Do you have any pics of the action?

Good effort to you both!

Regards

Wildfowler

Hi wildfowler , I thought I had taken some photo's of the action but could not find them when downloading them to the pc ... I will get some taken when it comes back from the gun smiths ..the punt is fibre glass ...the hull moulding was taken from a wooden punt by gentleman who I don't want to name on a open forum without his permission there's lots of history with it wich was confirmed after I had a phone call....the gun is 1/14" and proofed for 10 ounces ...

It's like waiting for a bus and 2 come along at once , I've just got off the phone from a friend who has found me another single gun & punt which I shall be going to look at this week .....

Ah! A punt gun in your iving room.

Hope that worked out better for you than it did for me.

Interesting to see that the guns screw breach has the thread cut on the outside. Is it a "false" breach with a separate internal screw plug to retain the cartridge or is it a "Moore and Grey" style externally threaded screw breach?

The punt looks like it will clean up nicely. Have fun with it!

Hi mudpattern , it has a internal screw plug .. the gun was bought into the house for us to look at as it was raining heavy ...

That is a great project Washfowler & I wish you the best of luck with it & don't forget to post some pics on here when its finished & some when at work .

Incidentally a friend of mine came across some unknown glass plate negatives of punt gunning & wildfowling some years ago God knows how old they are but the gun was much larger than the one you have & probably not legal today .

Hi pole star its giving us hours of pleasure restoring so far ,plus i'm sure there will be many more to come , we have loads of history with it .. we had some great news wednesday .a old man who comes to the same yard where we keep the punt , he reconised it after a long chat with him it turns out that he has a painting of our punt which we now have photo of ..plus he has footage of it being fired while out punting back in the 70s .. so he is going to get it copied onto a cd so ile post it on the forum ...

Anyone any ideas on what the cost would be to build a new two man punt from timber would be ??? , there are some detailed drawings in Payne Gallways book the Fowler in Ireland , been wondering for some years now & would like a go before I get too bloody old ! :hmm:

Maybe Ask Wildfowler on here, as he has just built the punt!

  • 4 weeks later...

well we've both been really busy of late myself with the new job , and Allen has also been working extra shifts ... we finally both got together Thursday and spent most of the day on the punt .... it's now ready for painting so i'm hoping the weather stays good this week as i have a couple of days off ..so i can get it painted and start searching around for some breaching rope ....
