fuzzypigeon
I haven't shot over it or had a decent bag on it yet but I was out most of the day on a paddock doing a bit of shooting (ended up with 10) but the field next to the paddock is barley, the flightline going across wasn't too busy one or two every 30-40 mins but I would say around half of what was on that flightline dropped into the patches on the barley, so it's not going to be too long now gents till the barley starts to get some action, so chin up guys!! JDog
Are the barley ears filled? They are nowhere near down here.
TIGHTCHOKE
Watching and waiting for the ears to fill and the weather to knock some down in the middle of the country. Then we'll get out on the barley!
hushpower
Been checking the barley where i shoot these last two saturdays but no joy ,need some sun for the heads / ears to fatten and go milky for the birds to show interest ,am guessing 2- 3 week off yet,but who knows. fuzzypigeon
No but the barley is quite patchy on this particular field, the ears are just starting to get a slight yellow it's a good 6-7 weeks away from being ready to harvest and the patches have started to get flatened already by the birds
aga man
i am starting to get the same feeling. this afternoon i saw some winter sown barley local to me and all the tell tale signs that the birds are starting to show interest. power lines running over the field had quite a few birds on and odd ones were dropping into the crop. i was in moving traffic so unable to watch. i will go back shortly for a look and get a sample of the barley to show what stage it's at. aga man. Raptor1971
I've got the same up here, birds just staring to drop in patches but not masses of them I reckon a couple of weeks and then we should have game on, I keep checking the different fields every other day to see whats happening eager with anticipation to start

lakeside1000
Last Thursday I was decoying over some sugar beet but on the next field over the barley has already started to change color and there were birds dropping into it all afternoon, pity its not on my permission, but it is worth watching, it wont be long before the pigeons begin to target it as the beet starts to toughen up and the peas are not yet ready,
fuzzypigeon
Went out for an hour this evening, only took a flapper and a seat, put the flapper in a patch of barley which hasn't grown as much as the rest of the field, had 11 shots in that hour and finished with 5 so the pigeons are definitely starting to have a look, the shots I had 6 decoyed perfectly and 5 were crossers which flew straight over the flapper, if only I could start hitting the bloody things when they decoy I'd be doing alright

VINCED 686
The winter barley on one of my perms is colouring nicely. There are a lot of birds feeding in the rape in the next field and the power lines go through both. For the first time they have been perching on the barley side so I'm keeping a close eye on it. I sat and watched for a bit today and the pigeons were circling the field but no dropping in. They seem to be fixed on the rape field still (Have been all year) The field isn't on my permission though and the farmer wont have it shot because its too close to the road and some houses His call I guess ! On the up side .......loads of birds just waiting and watching. Ill keep doing the same. I can wait I'm still getting plenty of action on spring Rape to keep me happy
masmiffy
Personally I hate shooting over the stuff! Unless you got a good size area to drop birds on it seems pointless cos you wont find half what you shoot!!
motty
I have also seen pigeons dropping into barley, today.
