timmy264
Hi fellas Found out a week or so ago that my wife of 18yrs wants a divorce. As we have a 15 year old son, I don't want to try and force a house sale even if I could so it looks like I won't get a penny until he's 18 or maybe 20. Renting looks like my only option. The question is, how do I go about moving my guns( 4 shotguns and 2 rifles)? Do I just move them and then get the feo to check it afterwards?i could probably do with phoning him first but dont want him to think theres any reason for concern, which there wont be. Can you fit gun safes into rented properties or do you need special permission? Thanks in advance Edited July 3, 2013 by timmy264
the pigeon man
Sorry to hear that pal :( but fitting cabinets in rented house is fine let the FEO know first and go from there
rimfire4969
Really sorry to hear your news. I have friends who rent with shotguns and fac.
timmy264
Thanks for the quick replies. I wasn't sure as it'll be someone else's house and I've never had to rent before. I'll give my feo a call and give him the heads up before it happens. Been advised by a good friend to treat it as an adventure so I'm trying to keep in that frame of mind
HDAV
Get proper legal advice ASAP (that means paying) moving out of the marital home is a bad idea financially! As for renting i would put guns into RFD aSAP until you are settled. Technically you need landlords permission to fit a cabinet as it will effect the material of the property (drilling holes) just like have a sky fitted etc if your good about it then i would find a place fit cabinet then inform FEO of change of address, when you move out fill the holes and decorate. timmy264
Won't be moving out till I've got everything sorted with the solicitors. I'm going to loose everything I've got anyway but I'll be OK if I've got my guns and the bike!!
HDAV
Get guns to RFD for storage and appointment with lawyer ASAP!
team tractor
Why would you loose everything? Mine moved out with my kids and went with nothing . If you move out you'll regret it and have no claim plus don't do the idiot thing and offer maintainance. I pay a small amount and don't need to pay anything by law as I have my kids 12 days a month . timmy264
Didn't really want to do that unless I really had to.just got some new permissions and don't really want to let them do. I'm quite chilled usually and don't have any intention of using them against anyone no matter how bad I feel!!!

team tractor
Forgot to say I arranged shot guns to be stored with mates if needed and my feo said well done . It was only just in case
charadam
The FEO should only be concerned with the security of your cabinet in your new location. Rental property etc is irrelevant.
Lord Geordie
If your at all unsure, simply ask your landlord if you can fit a cupboard to the wall in a cupboard! You don't need to tell him what it's for Some might have something to say and MAY refuse to return your deposit, if not given the OK first, due to damage when you leave! As for fitting the cabinet and storing guns BEFORE clearance from your FLO. It's a NO! Put them in with a local RFD or in a friends cabinet "only if his guns are on your cert and yours on his as SHARED! For the short term! I left the marital home and left EVERYTHING behind. I took nothing but my Clothes! She got everything and wanted even more! Divorce is not easy! Questions running through your head! Self doubts, Anguish, feeling low etc! Keep your friends close and try to get out and about! Eventually it gets a bit easier, but for me, initially I was a bit lost. This is when you find out what real friends are for! Hope things go smoothly for you

northeastshooter
Could you not either out the shotguns on afriends cert and the rifles in ur local rfd to hold or out them all in ur rfd till u get something sorted
welshwarrior
Fit the cabinet in a wardrobe hard for landlord to notice!!! Tell the Feo once you have a new address then tell him once the safe is fitted. I move regularly with the wife's work so do this most years. Thunderbird
As far as moving house is concerned, when I last moved, I installed the cabinets (and guns) in the places I judged the best, then wrote to the local force (I moved forces too) to tell them. I had a visit not long after, the FEO casually asked me if the house was owned or rented, and he didn't seem bothered, just ticked a box on his sheet. He agreed the cabinets were in the best places. I wasn't going to put my guns with an RFD when to my mind it was a simple process. I asked the FEO if, retrospectively, what I had done was correct and he replied that it was quite correct. As to telling a landlord, I have been a landlord in the past and to be honest I think it would have peeved me a little if someone fitted a cabinet without asking first, especially if the world if shooting was unknown to me. Why don't you prepare an email to the letting agent or landlord along the lines of: "I would like to install a safe in the property in an inconspicuous place, such as inside a fitted wardrobe. I undertake to make good any damage when I leave such as filling holes and redecorating. Please indicate by reply that this is acceptable." garry52
Sorry to hear your problem but why do you have to leave your kids are old enough to stay with you in your home if she wants the divorce then let her leave too it's always the wife that gets the house and kids and a easy life WHY I know it is very hard when divorce is on the cards but why should the man have to move and suffer. Good luck

She barely see's him even now! Her choice and more to the point Her loss. The divorce was a straight forward one as She admited to having an affair! I got set up in a Flat for a year then moved on to a bungalow! After a few more.moves I now reside in a 2 bedroom house and both Chris and I are well settled! As I say, over time it gets easier! At first though it's not simple!

As said just ask up front and most will be fine and just expect it made good afterwards. Good luck with it all while its amicable I wouldn't involve your FEO but at any sign of things getting iffy put them in storage before you get asked any questions, these things rarely go that smoothly
Thunderbird
I read something somewhere about a chap who suspected his soon-to-be-ex wife would make up some mumbo-jumbo about him threatening her with his guns, so unbeknown to her he lodged them all with an RFD. When the armed response unit turned up after her inevitable false allegation he politely gave them the cabinet keys, and they opened it to find the receipt from the RFD for all the guns. As far as I know the STBX got into fairly serious bother, and rightly so.
