French Pigeon Shooters in Kent

What's all this about French pigeon hunters coming over to Tilmanstone in Kent on organised trips to shoot pigeons ?? Apparently they are shooting across public footpaths and showing total disregard for locals including unseating a horse rider with their antics. Is this what our sport really needs ? I for one don't think so...

They're allways complaining we r stopping the birds from going over to them  ,, you should know by now foreigners can do what the hell they like in this country.

East Anglia has a lot. Friend of mine runs a first class company with organised shoots of all kinds. Europeans pay big money for well organised shoots both game and pigeon and even crows.

But then we can go wild pig shooting in France, Germany and many other places. Partridges is Spain. Doves in South Africa and South America.

Fowling in Ireland, Scotland, Canada and other places.

What's the gripe?

From reading the article they have done nothing wrong apart from being French. Stupid article and just another idiot having a go at the French for no reason......

When I go to France to shoot there are not articles about me or my friends - yes we dress a little different but so what. In spain the locals have one or two comments when we shoot local boar but that is normally due to the local agent not giving enough notice or our business meaning a local chap can not shoot that day.....

A load of old cobblers I say. About time people stopped harping about old feuds and accepted we are all the same with our own little quirks.....

Would welcome them over to have a little shoot on my patch if it meant I could go over there and shoot some more......

There's no problem caused if they shoot safely & legally...the money they spend is as good as anyone else's. Speaking from my own experience with foreign shooters in the Orkney Islands, I'm sure the details of safety briefings, if given at all, are lost in translation...

Two threads on the same subject have been merged.

As has been said, the only reason it got in a national newspaper is because they are French.

Nobody got hurt, a local Farmer just making a few bob and didn't bother to point out where the footpaths and bridle paths were.

Move along, nothing to see here. :)

The farm owner is Richard Ledger according to the local paper in Dover and as I understand it he will have no tolerance of untidy or unsporting/dangerous shooters.

Tilmanstone is 5 miles frome the Dover ferry terminal so that equals 2 hours travel time from Calais.

So why should he not accept French shooters?

I have had the pleasure of shooting a couple of years over his land before now and he is an absolute OK farmer IMHO.

Its just a press blow up against shooters in general about gunning scaring the riders/horses who should be aware of what will happen around harvest time and so adjust their schedule as we all use the countryside together.

That's spot on what I thought when I read the pile of poo in a national paper this morning. I've shot Mr. Ledgers grounds for 30 years and can tell you he will not tolerate idiots firing across foot paths, nor do I for one minute believe a sporting agent would be foolish enough to position them in such close proximity without specific instructions in arc of fire, nor do I think the French would act so irresponsibly. It is true there are plenty of problem paths in the area but it is not illegal to shoot close to such paths, common sense would avoid any problems.

Birds being dumped is a personal pet hate of mine and it has long gone on everywhere, only last month 5 minutes from my house I found a bell end had dumped 20 odd freshly shot birds by the side of a pretty back road and had not even made any attempt to hide them from the public, I moved them to a hidden position. I have known shared bags of near 500 birds being dumped by the old coal mine workers back in the day, some of whom were friends of mine so it's not a French trait. In fact they are far more likely to take the slain home to cook.
