Medic1281
Golf is a good compromise. Audi is good quality but way over priced, vw similar quality but still overpriced. I would not consider the ford. I believe the skoda would be worth looking at, I've got a golf gtd at the moment, but my next car will be a skoda. fruity
New golf , I have the new gtd and love it, handles well , good on fuel no bad points for me really And you can just get a 30" shotgun in the boot lol

Medic1281
My only criticism of the golf gtd is that it should be 4wd, it has too much torque for the front wheels to handle properly. If it had the Quattro system like its Audi cousin then it would be a great car, especially if chipped to 200+bhp!

Salop Matt
Golf over the focus every time ! And the Audi is just an over priced golf anyway so I would go golf ! ATB Matt
sishyplops
Golf will have much better residuals over the ford , but man can you haggle with the yts sales guys at ford (sweeping statement I know)

ATB Matt Indeed, but a lower insurance class and holding value better than the golf My only criticism of the golf gtd is that it should be 4wd, it has too much torque for the front wheels to handle properly. Dead Eye Dunc
Go for the Ford. You won't regret it (and you wont get bored of having to tell you how reliable VWs are while it's in the dealership...again!) I had a Golf R32 (3.2 v6, 4wd, etc) in super clean condition. It was the worst car I've ever had. Badly engineered, not that well built and the dealers are pure crooks! I work on a lot of different cars and VW group (VW, Seat and, to a lesser extent, Audi) would always be at the bottom of my list. The Kia Cee'd is also worth a look. Had an estate in at the same time as a golf estate of the same year. Everyone felt the Kia did everything better than the VW. You won't regret it (and you wont get bored of having to tell you how reliable VWs are while it's in the dealership...again!) an r 32 badly built? Your having a laugh.one of the most solid built motors on the road.just look at the percentage of cars on the road that are vw! I had a Golf R32 (3.2 v6, 4wd, etc) in super clean condition. bobt
I had the same choice, as a company car either ticked the boxes, went A3 140 tdi, 65mpg, fast as needed, and in 44,000 miles in 2 years has only been in the garage for 2 services, its due a change next july, but I dont like the pop up dash on the new A3, now what??? aris
Golf 7 2.0l TDi - 79mpg Extra Urban. Beautiful car - fits like a glove when you sit in it. Was so close to buying one, but needed something a bit bigger. Would have bought it in a heartbeat otherwise. Paul223
bear in mind the glof and audi are virtually the same car, the audi will be cheaper to insure, same engine, box, body on the audi is a few kgs more should do same mpg on a recent trip to Cornwall our A3 (170 quattro) returned 47mpg, was driven unsympathetic to fuel consumption and is based on 900 odd mile of mixed M way, A roads and small twisting hilly lanes. At one point on the M5 a rolling speed limit reduced our speed down to 50, the miles left in fuel tank rose from the mid 400's to 600, so theres plenty more scope for better fuel consumption. shaun4860
The golf/Audi A3/Seat Leon/Skoda are all basically the same My Seat Altea has the 170 VW diesel in it, and on a long run, 99% motorway @ 70mph gives just under 55MPG (fill run fill, not trip comp)
Paul223
Trip comp on ours works out damn near bang on, within in a tenth of a mile per gallon
shaun4860
Trip comp on ours works out damn near bang on, within in a tenth of a mile per gallon Mine doesnt, on the run where i got 55mpg the comp said I was getting 44mpg, that was why I refilled it when I got to where I was going, I had brimmed it upon leaving, and brimmed it again when I got there, I didnt want to believe I was only getting 44mpg A friend of mine's neighbour has a Rav 4 2.2diesel, Apparently it has never dropped below 47mpg even when just pottering around town Edited September 10, 2013 by shaun4860
Paul223
Ah right, I'd be suspicious if it worked out correct on a brim to brim as it can't value whats in the filler pipe Edited September 11, 2013 by Paul223
shaun4860
Ah right, I'd be suspicious if it worked out correct on a brim to brim as it can't value whats in the filler pipe I brim it till it clicks......then keep trying it slowly till it wont take any more (clicks out straight away) repeat when refilling, you must get almost the same amount in as makes no difference the downside of this is looking at the cost of a full tank of fuel these days....
