Wildfowler12
My mate picked some decoys up from a pound shop a few weeks back. They where crappy pond ornaments, shrunk down mallard with a bad paint job. Anyway given that they where £1 each he bought the lot. The keels needed some weight adding to them, so I filled with sand and sealed the plug. I tried them on the river on a mother line and they worked well, so I tackled the paint job next. I just raided the garage and mixed whatever paint samplers I had until I got a colour close to what I needed. Not bad for 8 quid!!
edenman
Very nice, might be the way ahead given the daft price of decoys these days!

Wildfowler12
I've told him to clear the shelves every time they're in stock! I think I may have a slight obsession, anyone who's been in my garage will vouch for that

Wildfowler12
It was a pound shop. I'm not sure which one though, I've checked poundland in Warrington and there was none in there so perhaps it was another store?
Wildfowler
My mrs went in to one in the summer and called me to say they had then for £1... She picked up £25 worth! I sold a few to my mate who is just starting out but I still need to do the same as you've done to the rest... I don't need them at the mo as she did the same last year too! anser2
I bought 10 malard and 10 teaL decoys from a pound shop ( cant remember the name ) in Kings Lynn a few years ago. The teal decoys were fine after a paint job . The mallard decoys were a bit small , but when painted up as wigeon were ok. However there were a few problems with the mallard decoys. The back joint seam split after a few uses and in very cold weather the attachment eye snaped off. I cured the splitting problem by drilling a small hole filling thedecoy with an areosolvent foam that set inside,. It added a little to the decoy weight , but cured the joint splitting problem. They are worth a punt if you are starting out decoying as they are cheap enough to make a good spread and they are also useful to add to my main decoy spread when shooting on the Broads when I often use 30 or more decoys. But i would add to them as and when you can afford it with better quality decoys.

If your decoying midday then it might make a difference (I don't do a lot of fowling in the daytime) but in the half light I haven't noticed a difference between my £1 per decoy and my £10+ decoys... They're definitely a cheap and cheerful way to get a decent looking, large pattern for very little money! Grandalf
I obtained 30 mallard coys from a pound shop about 10 years ago. They have had hard work. Hardly any paint on them now. Still work though. I don't think the colour makes much difference in the half light in which we spend most of our fowling time. Good for village fetes for the kids to go 'fishing' for. They have raised a few bob over the years. One now sinks after about 2 hours and one has to be secured by its neck due the tag pulling off the keel. Still a bargain. They don't need to be a work of art. Teal coys can be any colour. The speed they come in at its just a blob on the water - or lots of blobs. For widgeon I use fish and chip plastic trays! kent
Its postage and carriage that wrecks deek prices. Big boxes small percentage cost of item, cant fit many in a shipping container either
