Should heavy drinkers receive more support?

So after seeing someone start the topic that they're trying to stop drinking for October (good on you if you see this), do you think drinkers who want to stop receive enough support? We're constantly bombarded with TV, Newspaper and Radio advertisements telling us how bad smoking is and it is apparent that the governments campaign to help people stop smoking is working. However, we hear very little in comparison with regards to drinking. I have a couple of cans each evening (not the 7% cheap stuff - more the 4%), not usually any more than that unless my friends are around, but it does help me to unwind and relax. Is that alcohol dependency? I'm currently very, very healthy and I don't think it will do me any harm in the long run. I would just prefer not to have that desire to have a beer at the end of the day.

Does anyone think drink is a massively under-acknowledged problem within the UK?

If you're worried that you are drinking too much, then you probably are drinking too much! That said reducing the amount you drink probably won't give you a longer life, it'll just feel like a longer life

Try drinking the beer with a meal and then having a very strong coffee to draw a line under the one can.

The only medical study that has ever been done on a large male population was in Demark - an extract can be seen here:

If you had a cup of tea to help you relax, would you worry that you had a tea dependency? Maybe it's not the alcohol that helps you unwind so much as sitting down with a drink that you enjoy. I like a beer or two sometimes in the evening. I've found a 2% beer that I like and sometimes I'll have that, there's no perceivable alcohol effect but it still relaxes me to sit drinking something I like the taste of.

I gave up the sigs some years ago it was not to hard as most people nolonger smoke I do not drink much but if I did I could see that it would not be simple as most people seem to think that alcohol is assential to life its everywhere when I was young only posh people drank at home ordinary people would go to the pub for a drink and a chat.

If the powers that be want people to stop or cut down on drinking it is simple just do what they did with sigs put the price up most people gave up smoking not for health reasons but at £6+ for 20 people could not afford to buy them but they will not do that as it is not a vote winner.

Sometimes its the psychological effect of sitting down at the end of a hard day, with a drink in hand (any drink, not just booze). I find a glass or two of sparkling mineral water helps.

Your name is guinness so I can't help but take that advice with a pinch of salt ;)

Back when I was young it was financially viable to pop into the pub for a couple of an evening. If the missus and I go into a pub now. Drinks for the two of us are more expensive than twenty fags. Three rounds and you're looking at no change out of a score!

you sound like you have nothing else to worry about. You should welcome the feeling of wanting a beer at the end of the day, its totally normal and good for you, like sex. Stop worrying and enjoy your life and don't get anal over nothing. una.

Nobody forced them to become dependant on alcohol....self inflicted...same as smoking.

If you had any understanding about addiction you would no that we are all diferent one person can drink or smoke or do drugs and not become addicted other people just get trapped and find it very hard to stop you may think that you are safe but then you could be addicted to porn for all we now. :whistling:

The insanity of controlled drinking is lost on many.

Over the door of every licensed establishment it says 'Licensed to sell intoxicating licqour'.

So, we have the insane idea that it's possible to ingest an intoxicating substance and yet still make rational, non-intoxicated decisions.

I think it's a combination. The person who is no longer happy with their drinking needs to realise that they have a problem and there is something they can do about it combined with the support of others who are not intoxicated.

Preferably those who have experience of overcoming not only the direct problems of alcohol but also the spin-off consequences that play havoc with families and acquaintances.

I do understand that we are all different. This is why I was able to smoke pot as a kid and not progress on to 'other things', whereas a guy I socialised with had a hard core coke habit of about a grand a week (when he isn't inside for dealing) last I heard.

I do believe some peoples personality/insecurities/confidence has as much to do with it as anything else. Effectively some people need a crutch and as such are more likely to become more and more dependent on their crutch.

I was an addict at one point, addicted to nicotine, but in the same way that some don't have the ability to stop, some do.

Prices should be brought down in the pub to encourage people back to having a pint or two with mates. Buying drink from the supermarket or wine lodge is encouraging heavy boozing at home. I have 2 pints most nights at a wee pub down the road from me as i stopped drinking at home earlier in the year, some times the missus joins me, it has an open fire and allows dogs in, and i just love it!!
