deaquire
Been looking around recently and struggling to find the ideal 4x4. The must haves: -4x4 -rear seats -have decent reliability -not too high tax band - just looked at an old freelander, £475 a year to tax! My budget is about 11k which would get me a lovely pick up but as they're classed as vans the insurance for me is extortionate and I'm not interested in any other 4x4 for that kind of money. So I'm thinking of something around the 3-6k mark...? Under 60,000 miles if possible that scores well on reliability, I'm fairly good with cars but don't want to spend all my time on my back in the cold in the middle of winter. I can't get away with a Defender, i'd get called a poser and don't want anything quite as small as a Jimny. Freelanders are all high mileage at that price and if paying more want something a bit bigger. Anybody know of anything? ferguson_tom
Nissan X trail, Discovery 2 TD5 or Discovery 3, Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2 warrior, Kia Sorento, Mercedes ML. List is pretty endless best bet is get on autotrader and start looking to see what takes your fancy. Saying that i dont think you will find anything worth having for 3-6k with under 60,000 miles on the clock.

I've had mine with direct line, admiral and lv over the years and never paid more than £400 a year thats a 05 plate l200 really its no different to me having any other 4x4. Road tax you will find is cheap and they make ideal shooting vehicles, personally I wouldn't have anything with a landrover badge simply because I do a fair mileage and don't want to get lumbered with large bills and ridiculous purchase prices. The all wheele drive system is next to usless, just take a look on YouTube.... The grand vitara has a decent all wheel drive system, a diff lock and a low ratio diff lock. HDAV
Depends how off road you want to go............. they are very good at normal off road situations unmade tracks, feilds etc if you want to follow tractors into boggy ground and drive up mountains then perhaps not so ideal. As for youtube..... I put mor efaith in people who know to drive off road than those that dont....... YOu can get a defender stuck if you drive like an idiot..... Seems to manage ok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANA8cDJzsUs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMp2XbMSPfM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLRVusFNd40 See,s to do OK even driven by idiots...... correct tyres very important and the better they are off road the worse they will be on road...... HDAV
That's a Subaru dealer trying to extole the virtues of a Subaru........ Most never see more than a wet playing field but with the right tyres are quite capable and lovely to drive enough space for 4 adults and luggage in comfort I don't own one but a good mate does his wife's car and they are on their 3rd in a row before that had a couple of vitaras

In honesty I've no idea, it's cheaper to insure a Type R! Pulling my pants down. I'm 25 so that might be why. Never crashed but 0 no claims bonus on vans even though I've driven the company van for the last 4 years without incident. If the insurance wasn't so high I'd buy a twin cab tomorrow. I'm happy with insurance being £700 or just over but no more. You can pick up a 2006 and on, Suzuki Grand Vitara for 5k + I do quite like them. that freelander must have been the v6 petrol for road tax to be that price? Just a 1.8 Almost the same a Ferrari I've access to a CRV atm I currently borrow when I want to go shooting but there's no low range and whilst it's ok, I'd prefer either a) lighter with the ability to switch between 2 and 4 wheel drive or b) a bit more off roading capabilities...such as a ******* pick up which I can't afford to insure at the age of 25! my gfs brother has a 09 ford thunder...its stunning, 2.5 td and hes only paying £750 and hes a year younger!! al4x
You ignore the van issue and insure as normal mentioning its for private use. The ones above all certainly used to be able to get online quotes through their car side and I just carried over my existing no claims
deaquire
The one that comes out on top is Gladiator. To get the best quote i've used confused.com and compare the market, both for van insurance (if i try to get a car insurance quote it doesnt recognise the vehicle?) Cheers guys you're helping massively
Penelope
What ever you do, don't get a Freelander 1. Good whilst everything is working but costly when things go wrong and they will.
deaquire
Cheers. I thought Land Rovers are abit notorious for reliability. My friend has a Freelander and it's cost him so much in the 8 months he's owned it. Gf's parents have an 08 Discovery, lovely to drive but my God it's expensive to fix. robbiep
I spent a week driving a mitsubishi ASX just recently. Selectable 2 or 4WD, 1.8diesel. Good economy (real 45 mpg-ish), sturdy but nice interior, damn comfortable (me and SWMBO both have bad backs) £10-11k would probably get you into one of those. Do take note though, some of them are only 2WD. Higher spec ones have the selector for 4WD. No selector (in middle, behind gearlever) = 2WD. SWMBO has an old Terrano 2.7d SWB, and when it dies, she reckons she'd be very happy to get one of these.

Fisherman Mike
Get a letter from company stating no claims in 4 years job jobbed L200 or pick up here you come...... Interested to know what the CR-V is lacking for your needs? I had a 2006 CRV 2.2 for 3 years...sure it wasn't good for 2ft of mud or Congo safaris but it got me into all the fields I needed to go and got me out again too. Work in a foot of snow no problem and back again too and any one reading this who knows where I live knows that its a 1:5 which ever way I try and get out of the village. probably the best Japanese diesel of the last 20 years, bags of torque, quick, frugal ( on the combined cycle 44 was the norm) and comfortable. Took me a while to get used to the dash handbrake and I did put a set of A/T tyres on it. Reliability issues...none in fact it regularly out scores most others in its class. All said and done a superb all round vehicle. The fold away picnic table and the coke can cooler connected to the air con is really useful too.! If however you are looking for a 4x4 for proper off road work with occasional road use Isuzu rodeo 2.5 crd. bullet proof and probably amongst the best of popular utility trucks The jap vehicles are best when it comes to off road and anyone who has ever put even the maligned vitara through a proper off road test will tell you that they also just quietly go about their work with little fuss and would be worth serious consideration also. So much carp is written about the capabilities of various 4 x 4,s and it always makes me chuckle when you see a jacked up monster truck with four track tyres,an 8ft snorkel and 1000lb winch rumbling down the motor way, shiny, pristine and spotless and never seen a days work in its life. Leather seats in an off roader ? whatever next... Edited October 15, 2013 by Fisherman Mike
