ollie
My little Vauxhall Corsa is getting on a bit and is not ideal for a shooting car, so I am looking into buying a 2nd hand van. I don't need too much space as it will be used for decoying, taking the dogs shooting and using for all forms of shooting. I don't need the van for tools so a small van is suitable. I obviously would like one which is good on fuel as I normally do 100 mile round trip for shooting. Diesel is a must. My Father has a Partner and it has been quite reliable, but he says it is quite hard on fuel. I would be looking to spend approx £3k. So what do you guys suggest? masmiffy
Look at a Peugeot 206 1.4 diesel If its same as the car then £30 road tax and 60 (ish) mpg Or get a car and black out the rear glass!! Just checked this on auto trader the mpg is unreal!! And its in Ireland!!! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201306067154022/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/price-to/3000/fuel-type/diesel/model/206/make/peugeot/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/radius/1500/page/1/postcode/pe195sz?logcode=p Edited October 15, 2013 by masmiffy
ferguson_tom
My brother in law had a vauxhall combo with the 1.7 CDTI which he used for commuting to work and at weekends we used for our disco business. It was a cracking little van, drove pretty nicely, mpg was very good and didnt really cost a penny in his time of ownership of about 3 years. For 3k you should be able to pick up a tidy little van. tigger
I've just brought a 2008 transit connect for £3495 lovely looking motor and used as the daily driver trips to the marsh etc, use the 4x4 for the shoot and rough stuff highly recommended..... filzee
I used to have a Transit Connect too. Although mine was for work i used to spend most of my time out shooting in it. Fantastic all the gear fit great in the back. Wasn't too expensive to run. I wish i hadn't sold mine
Hector Vector
I've got a 2004 Transit Connect that I use for transporting the gear and dogs around. It is, without doubt, the most disappointing (if not worst) vehicle I've had. It drinks fuel, destroys front tyres, leaks like sieve and is rubbish build quality (door seals falling off, rear anti-roll bar brackets fractured, plenty of rattles and squeeks, ever tried changing the oil filter on the Lynx diesel?). Service parts from Ford are not cheap either. It had under 20000 miles on it with a full service history when I bought it and it's not like it's had a hard life since; I look after my vehicles. Admittedly it does van things like carrying stuff well (due to it's shape) but this is outweighed by the negatives. There is no way I'd recommend anyone buy one of these. ollie
Astra van plenty of room plenty of mpg smooth drive an comfy Astra van was one of the options I had considered, as one of the fellas on our syndicate has one. However, the newer ones are rarer than hen's teeth in this country. He in fact had to go to England to get his.

I think buying vehicles is such a lottery these days I know a few people who have them and and think there great our work ones have had up to 200,000 miles on and still going strong filters and oil changed every 4000 miles and seem to be good there used and abused and still going can't ask for more than that IMO hence my own perchase..... As has been said it is almost a lottery buying a vehicle now. My Connect was an 04 plate and mine just ticked over 190k when i sold it and there was nothing wrong with it at all. Hector Vector
35 - 37 mpg sounds about right which is rubbish for a low output (mines a 75PS PLN) engine. I also have a Renault Scenic 1.6L petrol that returns near 50mpg on the same route to work as the Connect. It's not down to my driving style which I'd decribe as careful. It's serviced by the book and wants for nothing in terms of maintenance (except a good clean inside and out!). I cannot complain regarding the reliabilty, it's comfortable enough on short journeys (150 miles plus is a different story though!) but it just lacks any outstanding attributes. I was hoping for better in all respects; It's going to be my first and last Ford and I work for the company!!!!! Luckily a colleague is interested in it next year when I intend to change it, hope he doesn't change his mind...

Most people seem to agree the 75ps is underpowered really for the vehicle and the the 90 and 110 much better in terms of power and mpg, the ones we have and mine are the tdci 90 and 110 versions, the 75 is gutless compared to these I was very suprised when I borrowed one for a 300 round trip and certainly couldn't recommend this version to anybody
Hector Vector
Yes, it is the TDDi (pump-line-nozzle) rather than the TDCi (common rail). It is gutless but then I didn't buy it for it's performance and the performance is actually perfectly adequate for my needs. I specifically didn't want an older TDCi because the cost of fuel system repairs is frightening not that the TDDI is likely to be cheap! My heap had very low mileage at the time of purchase. Ttfjlc
I had a transit connect fleet vehicle, 35mpg average pushed 40 on a run. Being fleet it was the 75 hp engine which was gutless to say the least! To my knowledge it ticked over 120k come replacement time, I also suffered from poor door seals and electrics. oilyrag
Have an 04 Tdci 90 bhp Connect which I have owned from new, no real issues other than usual service stuff along with a couple of droplinks, an alternator and a couple of glow plugs. Does 40 mpg on average and is a pleasure to drive. Looking for a new Limited model at the moment.
figgy
If you want small and economical a little bipper van should be ideal. Berlingo / Partner vans are good if fitted with the HDI engine mine was the older 1.9 non turbo and liked a drink. Had a fiat doblo 1.9 jdi 105 bhp best small van I've had, ugly as sin but very practical and very good economy, surprisingly nippy.
