fenboy
My Mrs text me while I was at work today to say that the geese had found the old potato field / stubble field at the back of my house. She said they turned up around 9am and estimated 2000 now I have seen lots of geese on these fields before but never that amount . As I suspected by the time I got home from work at 18.00 it was obvious she had miss-counted , there were at least 3000 !!!!! , which is an awful amount of geese to fit onto a 10 acre field, it looked like a carpet !! So Guess where I am going tomorrow hopefully they will put in another appearance and I will get a couple in the bag.

The Geese have only just turned up and are NOT doing any Damage so why go shoot them !!!!! I shoot and have shot Geese Inland for nearly 40yrs so my advice would watch them flight in THEN flight them from a couple of fields away. WHY ?? Your enjoy your flight bag a few but most importantly you WON'T disturb the Geese so offering you more flights until they feed the field or it's Ploughed. Only this morning I took 2 Mate's and used this approach ( as I've done for years) Result 2 VERY Happy mate's but more important 10,000+ Pink's still feeding where they have for over a week well apart from the few that was shot. DON'T make the mistake a lot do Rush in Decoy's on the one go Geese gone then moan I ain't got NO GEESE. Do it right and sensible you have Geese year in year out. Enjoy

Enjoy Thanks for your concern , but I have also been shooting pinks inland for more years than I care to remember , I will shoot them when I get chance some years they are there others they are not . I don't give a jot if they don't keep coming to the field or not because when I shoot it I will take no more than four and after that they can do as they please , you will not see pictures of geese falling out of the back of my motor !! Plenty of times I have seen lots of geese and the next day they have gone elsewhere , so strike while the iron is hot is my motto Oh and I dont decoy them , I shoot them as they flight into the fields. fenboy
Nice attitude and reply. Was ONLY offering friendly advice obviously you DON'T need it oh wise one. I think if someone has an attitude you need to look in a mirror. All I have done is answered your concerns , your telling me not to rush in and shoot as it will scare them away , and I am telling you I don't care because I have no interest in stretching out the shooting so I can get more birds over a longer period by shooting them two fields away as you would like , this would be difficult also as two fields away in on a farm on which I have no permission So just because I do not want to shoot birds as you suggest does not mean I have an attitude I am sure your advice would be most welcome by someone , but I always find it best on a forum to offer advice to those that ask for it . squirrelhall
3000 geese in a 10acre field. Wont take them long to clean that up. Not to mention fouling it up and moving on. Strike while the irons hot if your only going to take 4. If you go back 2 fields unless it s blowing a gale chances are they will be 100yds + high, as by photo they are pinks and not canadas

Here we are Nice attitude and reply. Was ONLY offering friendly advice obviously you DON'T need it oh wise one. He is far from admiring it , hence the capitals and oh wise one comments I could not see where my original reply was a poor attitude as I was just telling him I am experienced myself and am not worried about stretching the sport out as I have no interest in shooting a shed load of inland geese in a season , he seems to have taken the hump that I will do things my way not his. They could be gone tomorrow My thoughts exactly , I have been shooting them on these fields for years and know full well I could have left them today for them to be gone tomorrow and it can sometimes be another two years before I get another crack. squirrelhall
I think they will be 100yds + high because that's how high Pinks fly over land in my experience then they whiffle down when they get to the feeding area

I have seen them flying low inland before dropping into food in the area though.
ayano3
I don't see that what Fenboy is doing is any different to the many stories we read about goose shooting over decoys in Scotland, other than he didn't use decoys and in fact may have either called them in or remained concealed until such a time he had the chance to take a shot. I am sure many shooters pay good money to do this. If he was to sit there and take the numbers that others do I am sure we could start to question his sportsmanship. I will say well done on this occasion and be careful of those overhead lines or you will have me in your field too! Only my opinion.

They get chased around more inland than they do down here.

Thanks Graham Those wires and geese are a good bit further than they look in the pic , I would guess the wires are a good 600 yards away.
