sishyplops
Hi all, am about to fit a bull bar to my ford ranger and will put a pair of spot lamps on, question is what is the law regarding wattage for these, I believe it's 55w for on road , anything you like for off road, if I was naughty and wired a pair of 130w to the main beam will it fail it's mot? Or should I fit a 3 way switch so I can turn them 1. On 2. On with main beam. 3. Not to come on with main beam What do you guys do? Just pull the wire off the high beam when it's mot time? Lord Geordie
I believe there is a height restriction on ROAD spots. Also I believe you can simply COVER the spots with propper caps for an MOT and normal road use.
mrwabbits
For spot lamps, Personally, i would wire them through a seperate on/off switch so they can be isolated in the OFF position, and link a feed off to a relay from your high beam if wish Make sure that you do wire in a seperate fused relay to power the lamps up. Do not just link a feed wire straight from your main beam without going through to a relay before spots,, otherwise you will burn out your indicator stalk contacts/wiring or melt the plastic fittings in the stalk. 130w ? that`ll dazzle the ******* ,,,, and the rabbits
sishyplops
hi yes i will use relevant relay, just was unsure of legal requirements, my understanding is you can only use 55W, Xenon ones are generally only 35W, but Xenon spots are stupid money, am looking for a used set of KC driving lights
Kes
Construction and Use regulations will tell you exactly what is permissible. I think you can google them and search for the key words on line - failing that, there are special stations which approve personal builds under the Regs and they are very helpful - saves them time and pain later. kent
Thing is IF you caused an accident and a fatality how might you feel? and how much might it cost you? If there is a limit I should stay below it or have them on a separate switch for off road use only personally

Rushjob
No height restriction, must be fitted securely and symmetrically when viewed from the front and can only illuminate when main ( high ) beam is illuminated.
Westley
spot lights are not part of the mot test they are aux not obligatory Yes, but I think that you will find that , if fitted, they have to work.

Alycidon
I put a pair of 80/100 watt headlamp bulbs in a Ford XR4 maybe 20 years ago, within a few months the excess heat from these bulbs had crazed the reflectors requiring both headlamps to be replaced although this was not an MOT issue. Fitting such bulbs may also give an insurer reason to invalidate a claim should the need arise. Buy decent lamps, Cibee Oscars and Hella are two I have used and rate and fit 55w bulbs. Old farrier
Check before you fit bull bars (lamp protectors ) They may invalidate your insurance and cause air bags to fail Just a thought don't want to spoil your fun I had to take them off mine invalidated warrentey All the best Of
