Fabhui
Here's the deal folks. The missus for Christmas is wanting to get me a pump action for some rough shooting as well as for clays. I've already got an O/U which I'm more than happy with and have now whittled my choice of pumps down to the following. Both of them are 12 Gauge, under £200 and in good condition: Mossberg 500AT (Cylinder Choked) Winchester 1200 (Cylinder Choked) Which of the two (and only these two) would you go for? Any reasons for or against each of them?? Cheers for any help or info. Edited December 17, 2013 by Fabhui
Gordon R
Mossberg every time.
HDAV
Why? Edit: Why a pump? Have a couple of lessons or 1000 carts instead both will make you a better shooter than buying a pump.... Sharpshooter.123
Mossberg without any doubt. Built like a tank
Beretta28g
I personally have a Mossberg, and a mate has a Winchester. Theyre both good but for me the Mossberg is better.
bruno22rf
None of the above-cylinder choke is too restrictive for rough shooting-find a multi or half choked gun-pumps are pretty cheap.
Sharpshooter.123
I do all my rough shooting with full choke
rtaylor
I bought a pump a couple of years ago, for rough shooting and it was cylinder choke. I ended up getting rid of it after 6 months or so. I also bought a semi for the same reason, got rid of that as well. I would strongly urge against getting a pump action. I shot terribly with it, as did my mates. I'm sure people will be along to say how great a pump is, but to me they are just a massive faff to reload/cycle, uncomfortable, unsafe and heavy to carry around. Good fun for a couple of outings but the novelty of thinking your a cowboy soon wears off. As above get some cartridges for you O/U or if it's too good to use for rough shooting get a cheeper O/U. If you've got a gun you happy with and shoot well with, then keep using that one instead of swapping back and forwards.
Scully
As much as I'm a Winchester fan, between those two it would have to be the Mossberg 500AT. Now, if the Winchester was a Model 12.
Fabhui
Well it looks like it's going to be the Mossberg then!

My thoughts exactly , you will not get the best out of all situations with just cylinder choke.

They are lighter weight than a semi or o/u and as safe as a gun can be. If you fire a shot you have to pump it before it becomes dangerous again unlike an o/u or semi. Other than the physical side of pumping it how is it any different to shooting any other o/u, semi or single barrel? Sight picture is the same so if it fits you should be able to shoot it like any other gun. Must admit though I'd want a multichoke not a fixed, if I was going for fixed I'd want it at 1/2 or tighter so you've got the choice to open it up more. Itchington Harris
What about those c-lect(?) Adjustable chokes are they worth having? I have my heart set on a 590 as soon as I get my fac sorted.

Danoi99
Mossberg, but would agree with others here on the choke issue. What does make me laugh is when people come on here and start slagging off Pump Actions by saying that they are unsafe, a pain to load etc then saying " I can't shoot well with one and nor can my mates" Don't let them put you off buying one. A good Pump Action is safe reliable tool that can serve you well for many years. People say they are not good for clays......poppycock. If you don't shoot well with one and the effort of racking the forend back and forth between shots is a bit confusing for you, then get a boring OU or Semi instead. I currently shoot a Pump Action at English Sporting and my averages haven't dropped at all. Remington Wingmaster 3/4 choke.......loving every minute of it. Merry Xmas to all. Kes
Sorry to be awkward but I would never use a pump gun - get a reliable gas-operated one. But Mossberg are the definitive pump guns nevertheless.
thepasty
Mossberg... Dont listen to all this tripe like "Dont get a pump gun blah blah".... if the gun fits you it'll shoot the same as any other gun that fits you..... its just different and I like that little bit more interaction with the gun and shooting. I flit between SA, Pump, O/U with no issues and shoot equally with all
HDAV
Cylinder choke is probably going to be too open to be effective at most quarry, ideal for hinges though......
