cloudwalker
Went out to check a farm with about 500 acres of rape on it. Found out the farmer has killed off the lot. One or two fields had a lot of black grass in it but other fields just had the normal amount of weed cover. The rape was about 4" high and there was a good plant across most fields. Now he has started to cultivate the fields again. Any ideas why he would of done this. It must of cost him a fortune in seed, fuel, labour etc? fruity
My guess would be low yield combined with low prices, so cutting his losses
sako751sg
My guess would be low yield combined with low prices, so cutting his losses It wouldn't be getting cut till middish 2014. Prices can go up,and how would he know the yield just now?
Sharpshooter.123
Im a farmer (or was) rape is high in price still (BUT) they dont take just any tacky rape seed any more.low yield and weed is just pointless, when pigeon and frost/snow sets in high chances are the plant will die anyway
fenboy
Just a thought but are you sure it was rape and not mustard turned in to add nitrogen ? They quite often do that around here.

Cranfield
Just a thought but are you sure it was rape and not mustard turned in to add nitrogen ? They quite often do that around here. That would be my guess, its something that has started happening in the last couple of years in my area.

DEADLY PLUMBER
Was rape grown on this field last year If it was then he has sprayed off what has self seeded. Either way watch close for when he drills the fields you might get some action. Also have a chat with the farmer and see what he is up to. Sprinter
May have been a lot of charlock in there if he got a bad batch of seed?
blasterjudd
Totally Agree with Sprinter Charlock looks like rape and will be why its been sprayed off to kill it! Probably the rape was put in too.late and with wet weather not taken then charlock takes over we have same issue here on 2 fields and had to.spray them off to kill it then will redrill.with beans in March as and when the weather improves! Assuming it does ...... May have been a lot of charlock in there if he got a bad batch of seed?

Grandalf
What ever it was has gone. The question is what is he going to drill into it and when. You need to be there about two days later.
cloudwalker
That would be my guess, its something that has started happening in the last couple of years in my area. All 500 acres were Wheat which was combined in early August. They cut it, bailed and drilled it with rape within 24 hours, we were there when they did it. They then spread slug pellets over the lot. It came well to start with but they were very late in spraying of the weeds (about 4 weeks ago) and there was a good covering of black grass. It was definitely not mustard or charlock. My only thought was that they used the wrong spray and accidentally spray of the Rape. Could this happen?
JDog
This is a shot of a field of mustard taken last week. For those who are not farmers or not conversant with agricultural crops the two could easily be mistaken for one another.
yorkshire
it would not be the first time rape has been sprayed with something it shouldnt and all died off
cloudwalker
it would not be the first time rape has been sprayed with something it shouldnt and all died off How much would that cost them? What with the cost of seed, Diesel, fertilizer, slug pellets and labour for 500 acres it must mount up a bit!
