Always have a New Years day walk with Mac and the old fella so with the weather supposed to close in quickly we held away at just after 9,feeding a couple of ponds first before getting the guns oot.Rab has a had dodgy back leg for the last few days so took Jake solo for the first time proper.

Game was thin on the ground but nay helped by a lot of the feeders being empty or blown over but there were enough to keep Mac and the old fella on their toes.Very strong wind and spitting through most of the time made conditions nay ideal but they ended up with four cocks and a hen. Some poor shooting at the start but by the end they were getting to grips with the birds.Must say Jake hardly put a foot wrong and is very steady on the hunt and rarely goes to far in front.

Finished the walk at 14.30 so hadnt time for a woodcock so held away to one of the ponds we fed in the morning.Numbers had decreased a fair bit lately but still enough barley disappearing to show its still getting used. Was there in plenty time so had a seat for a half hoor and then when dark enough just stood waiting.Once again, was beginning to doubt there would be a flight when a pair came in,resulting in a mallard doon. For the next 15 mins ducks came steady and with the darkness most were carrying on unmolested but we did drop 6 mallards, but only picked 5 so will have a wee look tomorrow in the daylight.Another top day to start the year so hopefully the rest is as good.

A lot of ground covered the day and Jake can hardly keep his eyes open. His tail was covered in blood again so will check with the vet this week to see aboot getting it sorted.

Happy New Year all.
