What battery

Depending on your magnet it will draw between 2 and 3 amps of power per hour. So a 10 amp battery will last you between 3 and 4 hours.

Personally I use 12 amp batteries and carry spares in the car. For me they are the right balance between power and weight to carry if I can't drive to my spot.

I have two 5 amp, and two 7 amp sealed lead acid batteries, I use them on two A1 decoys flappers and my A1 decoys magnet with two hypa flaps mounted (very light load), they last well on the small motors that A1 use, and I always have a spare if im out for a long day. I did build my own magnet using a ford escort wiper motor, but the 7 amp battery only lasted about 2 hours at best, so its really more about the load on the battery matched to the battery output.I have so much gear to carry I had to modify a fishing trolly to carry it all, but I would rather be sure to have all I need for a good day, than sit in the hide regretting not bringing enough to make it worth while. :yahoo::yahoo:

hillbilly 17amp or golfing trolley battery :good:

I was down my local dump (sorry, Waste recycling centre) today, dumping a knackered battery. While I was there I picked up a Maxi Power 12v 18 ah golf battery. They don’t like to take things away, but it was raining so they were all in the office. Little tip there! Anyway got it home, put a tester on it. It showed 12.1 volts. Got it on charge now, and will try it out tomorrow. My magnet draws about 3amps under load, so I should be able to get 5+ hours a battery this size.

Use a car battery

A car battery is designed to give you a lot of power in one go, and runs down getting weaker and weaker. With a deep cycle battery (golf or mobility scooter) it is a constant voltage. Car batteries are also bigger and heavier.

This blog explains the difference.

So would one of those lithium deben tracer battery run my magnet is what really want to know and how long could it pissably last

Thanks dan

Take a look at this youtube clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5tvyle00vk

He is showing you the 22ah model which he said will run his magnet for 13 hours. Which tells me his magnet draws about 1.69 amps 22ah/13amps=1.69 amps. So if it was an 8ah model it should run for 4.7 hours, 8ah/1.69amps=4.7 hours. If it was very windy he would get less, because any extra load on the motor would up the amps.

  • 2 weeks later...

My friend lost his battery one day late last year but I had a deben lithium battery in the car as we had been lamping the night before. We just jammed the connectors from the whirler in and it lasted us all day. I just looked and it's an 8ah one, and wasn't fully charged to start.

They are pretty expensive though, you'd be pretty annoyed if you knackered it out through over use/something else bad happened to it. (I didn't want to say shot but it could happen!)

I use a battery between 17 and 22 ah and that generally does me most of a day. I carry a spare in the summer months for very long days, just in case

7.5 ah ones only last a short time, so you generally need 3 for a full day at least

I agree I use a 17.5amp battery and isn't it or heavy and lasts me 6-7 hours. All depends if u have a lightweight magnet or an older heavy duty one(which mine is)
