lurcherboy
Can everyone stop recommending Defenders to Baldrick please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am peeved off with PM's regarding what they are like :yp: This vehicle is for people who KNOW what they want, don't have perms And are able to hold a spanner without breaking a nail, don't give a fug if they can't see through the screen when its raining heavy, can afford 25-30 mpg, like the mildew smell of the interior, and last but not least, intimadate other road users in country lanes* Thank you for your co-operation PW Baldrick, please buy something from the east as I am sure you will be delighted with its performance, fuel economy, superior level of trim compared to all other marques, off-roading abilities (would shame a JCB) and parts that cost 10 bob no matter what it is. I think that fully covers my dad had this, brothers mate had that etc and they all done 5 million miles without so much as a oil top up. LB * Any motor coming up against you in a lane WILL give way when they spot you up close.

Wookie
I'm shocked that no one suggested either the Pada 4x4 (God's own small 4x4) or the Vauxhall Frontera. Ok, I'm biased towards the Pada as it was my first ever car, but the frontera I'm driving now is not a bad car for the money I pid for it. Very comfortable, spacious, 2.2 Ecotec diesel engine with a fair bit of torque, 2WD by default, with 4H and 4L seletable on the fly. Also, They have most of the same parts as the Isuze Rodeo, so they wear well. Mine's done 180k and it's solid as hell. Economy is mid to high 30s too, so better than most. Tam
Subaru Foresters are good i had an S Turbo - couldn't fault it but fuel consumption's not great 27-31 taking it easy but i was very low 20's or less scare the **** out of boy racers though What about a pick-up with canopy L200's are good

Very good at towing, adequate off road with proper tyres but will not mix with the big boys. Land Rover is best and IMO the Shogun / Pajero is a VERY close 2nd. Baldrick
Am just re-reading the this thread that I started (much to LB's evident anger and disgust) several months ago. I'm still no closer to actually deciding on a vehicle. The girlfriend at home, who controls the purse strings, wants a Volvo V40 or V70 - a sensible car... The trouble is, she'll never be driving the thing. I'm going to be the one stuck in rural Essex, spending my working week involved in estate/farm/forestry management. I'll also be spending my weekend either shooting, or towing a dinghy around. The girlfriend is also being drip fed comments/reviews about reliability/build problems on post-1998 Discovery Td5s by her deeply irritating father (the kind of cretin who believes 'Which?' magazine to be the best source of information on 4x4s....). This is not making my fight for a 4x4 any easier. The simple thing would be to play the reliability card and buy a Subaru Legacy/Impreza, or a Volvo V70 AWD. I still maintain my need for a 'proper' 4x4, hence my recent thread about trying to track down a good second-hand Td5 Discovery. So, do I knuckle down and demand a Td5 Disco, or a Trooper? Are there any better suggestions from you guys?
decroyffe
I am saddened by your reply Baldrick. Only 250 in the uk and most are used by townies and I bet most are north of the river B) LB Lb's right about the TR Landys, i've a friend who owns a 110 tomb raider, un-touch in its original form. It's fantastic. also another friend who has the 90 version, he's gone over the top with the bling and it looks like a misfit, still both outstanding for a all rounder i'd swing towards the trooper or a fourtrak. i've got a 90 at the minute and it's up for sale shortly, although the fourtraks not as good with the fuel i'm going back, the 90's a great tool but it's also a hobby, there like babys needing constant attention. to date i've owned many 4x4, they've all been tried and test in exteme conditions, to the school run, and the best for comfort, off road capablitys and just being practical for me is a fourtrak. also the fourtrak are great for towing, top pulling machines my next fourtrak will be my 4th, i've had a few troopers, a RRC, 90, 110, 410, vitara and a few others. i cant comment on a mitsi because i've never owned one, i had one last week which was a paj, one word, camel. i've never used as much diesel in my life. like i say it wasn't mine so i never took it off road but i must say it was the most comfortuble ride i've had. 08shooter
my father has used mitsi shoguns on the farm for over twenty years .he is on his 5th now and i assure you they got dogs abuse every day of life, they serve him well with no bother that s why he keeps buying mitsubishi B)
Baldrick
Just listened to another vote of confidence in the Disco Td5's ability and reliability from a friend, who put 25k miles per year on his Td5 from new in 2003. He also runs a Td5 Defender, which also hasn't put a foot wrong.
fusion
If you see a 4x4 at the side of the road with the bonnet up it's bound to be a Land Rover. Mitsubishi everytime. B) Cheers.
njc110381
I have to admit that both my landrovers were pretty expensive to run. Neither ever broke down, but bits did fall off or break sometimes. If I could afford a 110 crewcab, I'd have one. As I spent all my money on my Defenders and have no more spare, I have an L200 now B)

Mungler
Balders, sounds like you have already made your mind up on a Landy. All the people I know who have Landies have bought into the whole "Landy" thing - they are "enthusiasts" who are blind to the failings of their vehicles and blind to the better vehicles that come from the far East and Germany and that outsell Landies bundles to 1 on the world market. If you want one, and you clearly do, buy one. The smart money would be on a jap 4x4 or a G Wagon though B)
Baldrick
I'd be perfectly content with a good Isuzu Trooper or a G-Wagen, but her indoors has an inexplicable dislike of both of them.
Cranfield
Having read this thread from the beginning, it seems you have a number of minor problems. Problem number one is , "her indoors", who does not agree with your vehicle desires. Either leave her, or accept that you will end up doing what she wants, so do it now. Your budget of "7 - 9k" does not permit you to buy two vehicles, which would be another solution. Of course, "her indoors" wouldn't let you have two vehicles, so we can discount this idea. LB is a Landrover expert (my opinion), instead of arguing with him, you should save your energy for arguing with "her indoors", she is the enemy, not LB. All of the above comments are made in a semi jocular manner, as I have ceased caring which 4x4 you get. Anyway, "her indoors" has already told you what 4x4 you are getting, why ask us. naddan28
The question is do you reckon having a landrover, is worth all the extra agro from the missus compared to having the volvo/imprezza?

Dead-Eyed Duck
Just listened to another vote of confidence in the Disco Td5's ability and reliability from a friend, who put 25k miles per year on his Td5 from new in 2003. He also runs a Td5 Defender, which also hasn't put a foot wrong. Discos are absolutely **** off road - I should know as I have helped a friend dig one out. They are far too heavy and unstable and chew up the ground something shocking. The same friend has had endless gearbox problems with his, and it just goes to show his blind stupidity as he bought another and that was **** too. 25,000 miles a year is nothing to boast about - both of my Subaru Foresters did almost 120,000 in 2.5 years and did't falter once. The new Freelander looks a better bet, but the first models spent more time in the garage than on the road, and so I wouldn't waste my hard-earned brass on one proving that perhaps, they may just be OK. So, go boring Japanese and travel in luxury and reliability. Don
scolopax
I bought my Forrester nearly five years ago and have been more than happy with it. It does more than its fair share off road, its never being stuck but too be honest it has never been seriously challeged. A pleasure to drive on road and capable off road. For my next car I quite facy the 2.5 litre turbo, now that sounds like serious fun B)
