Hello all

Come next month will start looking for a new game gun for the following season as this one as been one to forget with a miss firing terrible fitting 12 bore .

Thw gun will be Mainly for walked up and mini driven game.

There seems to be alot of positive press towards 28bores but is there really that much difference between one and 20 bore? Part from more pellet count in a 20 bore?

Cheers

Just buy a lightweight 12 bore side by side. Better choice of ammo, carries better, open or closed, when walking up game. Opens wider and easier to load than an O/U. Double triggers give instant choke choice. A good English boxlock, average weight under 6 1/4 lbs. Average O/U 20 bore 6 1/4 lbs. give or take an ounce. Side by side is easier to have fitted, due to lack of stock bolt too.

I would say you will notice less of a difference going from 12 to 20 compared to 20 to 28.

It's definitely a bigger change going 12-28. I find for my ability, (or in ability as it may be) that my range is more or less the same 12 to 20. But I'd knock 10 yards off with the 28.

I'd go 20, 28 for me might be a little light on some taller birds

I got myself some gauge adapters. In my case a set of 12 to 28 adapters from Gaugemate.com.

I shot them last weekend in my 12ga OU - and it was quite fun. Only 16gram cartridges (all I could find), barely any recoil, and managed to hit a few clays with it too

I'm thinking of getting an inexpensive non-ejector SBS to leave these in there permanently - perhaps cutting down the stock so my younger son can handle it.

Though there are a few disadvantages - like it not ejecting or extracting the shell - for $99 (plus shipping) certainly cheaper than buying a new gun for the odd times you want to shoot a different calibre.

I love my 28bore and think nothing of shooting the same birds as I would with a 12g.

Fantastic for walked up shooting.

If I was buying again I'd opt for the exact same gun as I have in a 20bore purely for cartridge choice and availability.

Figgy

Couldn't agree more, I love my 28 bore but have been thinking along the same lines to getting a 20 purely for the cartridges.

Sorry to interrupt this thread but I saw gauge adapters mentioned. Does anyone know of a UK stockist? They seem popular in USA but not over here. I'd really like a 10 to 12 g adapter so that I can get some practice in with my 10 at a reasonable cost.

Nobody stocks the Gaugemates here as far as I know - but they will happily post them to the UK - I think postage is around $30. I bought them in the US on a recent trip over.

Little Skeeters also sell them abit cheaper than Gauge Mate.

I have a pair of 12 to .410 Little Skeeters they are ok pattern very well in my light s/s 12ga. Prob sell them shortly as I am after another .410 or 28 ga pump or auto presently, having become fond of a liitle single .410 I aquired.

The whole point to me is if they are out of range then I can perhaps have a crack at that one another day, if I personally was after range should I carry a 10ga? no, its about fun and challenge

If I was worrying over 28 or twenty in terms of how far I could shoot them I should get a light 12 ga as that will better them both
