Hevi-shot, seriously impressed!

Was lying on the foreshore last night waiting for the wigeon to flight and I saw geese coming back towards the estuary and then dropping into fields 1/2 mile from the estuary. Not really surprised as the moon was already up and bright, however I was surprised 30 minutes later when a skein came from behind me, however I only had 2 steel in the gun and they were 40yds up so I watched them pass. Two minutes later and another skein start coming from the same direction so I have time to put in the Hevi-shot. Last time I tried them I knew I was well behind the bird so this time I give it some and the first shot hit and it faltered the second folded it.

Unfortunately it looks to be an older bird, but still happy with Hevi-shot and I will have to stock up

Tungsten is good stuff and will cope with a goose at 50 yards provided you can hit it. However it does not like full choke ( blowing the pattern ) and I always had the best results from 1\4 choke or Improved Cylinder. Never used double impact but suspect its lead as 48gr is to heavy a load for steel. Forget about claims of 80 hyards range and stick to 50 yards or less. Even in lead few shells can kill beyond 50 yards consistantly , though the old Winchester XXX 1 9\16 oz buffered lead shells could do the job at 60 yards provided you were a good enough shot to hit th bird.

I sometimes use win xx 21/4 oz copper plated lead (inland scotland) but find them painful on the shoulder and why i now load lighter loads, heavy sintered shot available C&G

Let me say straight away that this is only a guide in the absence of any other information. It is, however, quite accurate and with experience and any/some fine tuning can put you 'on song'. While looking for something else, I found details of pellets #oz for Hevi-shot. As it was raining and I was bored, I calculated the BC for each size (American, 9 through to T) and then ran the necessary spec through the Sierra Suite programme. Should anyone like any figures for any of those shot sizes, just sing out.
