afternoon chaps....

I have recently acquired a 686 special and used it for some clays this week ..very happy with the gun choice....I used 28g ..7.5 cartridges and was happy with them but I was thinking of trying 24g next week ...in your experience would I see a massive difference with clays hit with 24g compared to 28g as the gun is light and id like less recoil if I could get away with it .

cheers and have good weekends lads

i think the best question i can pose for you is....

what quality of shell are you wanting to shoot??

economy,

club shells

decent club / semi professional shells

premium / Olympic shells

"other"

my favourite shell at the moment is a 24g #9 for RC2

to be honest I would spend upto £55 per 250 ...

Fewer pellets is fewer pellets, no way around that I'm afraid but it doesn't automatically mean your scores will suffer because there are other factors such as fatigue. Strangely though, some 24g loads seem to recoil more than some 28s.

I'm not especially recoil sensitive so the only advantage to me with 24s or 21s would be small saving in cost so for now I stick with 28g. You might want to try Power Blue from Express it's the softest 28g I've tried. Pretty good at destroying clays and certainly as good as Eley Olympics.

24g victory compak i found kick more than rc1 28 g,

my shoulder is knackered so i'm now looking for something softer or go back to an auto

Get yourself one of these -- http://www.recoilsystems.com/greenpad/green.asp

My lightly built teenage lad got one last summer and it seems to transform/remove/do something magic to recoil. I am genuinely amazed at how it has reduced his exposure to recoil.

He's like a stick insect and can now shoot velocity 28s or Superfasts at 27g with almost no reaction to recoil. I've no connection to the company but this has been an outstanding buy. :good: And the guy who owns/runs it is really helpful. Think he was a successful shooter in the past.

i think it doesnt matter to a point. they break clay etc....

now i go for the RC2 24g #9 and they are alittle snappy. they dont pound the shoulder, but you really notice them.

the intercomps were my favourite club shell. i just couldnt get hold of them.

pro ones same again, couldnt get hold of them.

then i tried some RC2s and loved them. really loved them.

some shells are silly money, but there are others that are extremely good value....

compare english sporuter to rc2 competition shells. is like chalk and cheese.

As the old saying goes, it's down to you to put the shot in the right place, I was at grimsthorpe yesterday and on one particular stand there is a long crosser. One guy I was with who is a good shot got 1 x 4 using gamebore white gold 28 7.5's and I got 3 x4 using eley firsts 24 7.5's.

21g hull comp X...

Cheap, sold most places and even before I had my gun fitted were about the only cartridges that didn't batter me

+1

The better half has just started shooting, went out first time today with what will be her gun when her ticket comes through, a winchester select light with kickeez pad. She was using these...no problems from recoil. I usually use the hull compex 28's and tried the 21's nice carts through a browning B725 hunter, and made little difference to my generally dismal scores.....but there was a fair bit less recoil...not that even the 28's kick hard in the B725, but there was a noticeable difference.

I prefer 28 grams I use both ends of the scale English sporters and black gold f2

In my opinion I don't break any more clays with f2's than with English sporters, just like a change, English sporters don't seem to get a good name but for me there's nothing wrong with them, I can break as many clays with them as any other make !

i have a green pad and the isis recoil reducer fitted to the gun already but still hurts.

Maybe time for an op and keep what i've got, dont know what to do at the mo

Sorry to hear that you still have pain. You're prob right in seeing medical advice. Good luck.

12 years of kick boxing in my youth has resulted in a hip replacement 3 years ago, now fragments of bone and arthritis in my shoulder

(if only i new i was going to start fall apart by the age of 44 ) :sad1:

If you can't hit it with a 21g cartridge you're not accurate enough! Hull CompX for me, because they feel the same in fibre or plastic and in 7.5 or 9. I didn't like the Fiocchi 21g cheap cartridge but the Eley were fine as well. £145 a thousand. I consider it's teaching me not to be sloppy!

His name is Dave Izzard, you will not find a more helpful retailer AND yes, he was (and probably still is ) a very good shot.

All right, I have shot only 24gm for years. For a soft shooting fibre load I use 24gm Express High Velocity. When you are allowed to shoot plaswads I use RC 2 cartridges, Fiocchi Top One are soft in recoil too.

Can you not make your gun a bit heavier by putting some lead in the butt as most Berettas tend to be muzzle heavy.
