Further Security questions

Last week 4 shotguns were stolen in the local area to me and its got me thinking, what more can I possibly do to deter criminals from my house?

We have an alarm and a Smart Water system in place, we had good strong modern doors and plenty of lights and alarm sensors etc, But the week point on any house is always going to be glass.

So what else can be done to keep scum bags out, And what attracts / catches the attention of criminals ?

Also want to know where I would stand with my 2 shotguns...... They are a pump action and a semi auto, when locked in storage would it be legal to remove the trigger mech`s and have them hidden elsewhere so if ever anyone did get in and did take the guns they would be useless to the robbers ? Am also going run a good steel cable through them to try and stop there removal.

It depends on your alarm but you can fit vibration sensors to the doors and windows, glass break sensors local to the windows. And if u really want a smoke cloak that when set off will fill the inside of your house in smoke(. A bit over the top!). Police responses alarm 12min responses time. Mega blaster sounders inside out outside the house. Really loud!!. Automatic gates on your driveway. if you have the space. I'll keep thinking of some more

Most are opportunistic, having dealt with more than a few burglaries I would suggest timer switches in lights/radio in the house, random rooms, random times.

Get rid of sash windows or install locking bolts.

Cameras- overt and out of reach and if possible pir as well.

Monitored alarm.

Decent lighting and cut away any bushes etc that shield the view to your front door etc.

Properly installed security film on the flassx you won't know it's there but it won't smash, make sure you can open them from inside in case of fire etc.

Dogs. Loud ones.

Nosy neighbours.

Dead bolts on doors not just Yale locks.

Upvc doors can normally be opened with a screw driver in seconds so make sure they are very solid and not bendy, the panels can normally be kicked out.

Beading on inside of Upvc Windows.

Smoke cloak or similar. .

No one wants to live in a fortress though so it's a balancing act.

Speak with your FEO, get any such measures approved. Do what you can we are getting a lot of guns stolen at present, rumour surrounds things like home grown drugs and increased port security connected to terrorism and illegal immigrants is making them less available to the crooks. Time to locate the safe is often more key to security than physical security of it.

If you haven't done this already look at fitting anti bump locks, glass is rarely broken these days of DNA and its costly to change to laminated or anti bandit glass, money better spent on cameras and better monitored alarms IMO.

Review your security annually, its no bad thing

All need to take note of this, I know one guy who is in our club just had his stolen in a big town 40 miles south of me and three separate thefts locally in very rural locations all in this season, add in the Kelbrook break in to that. The Cops send me the serial numbers and description of the stolen guns locally so this is not press scaremongering, it seems to be on the UP so review your security and protect our sport

Happens a lot in the bike Motorsport world

People get followed back from meetings (happened to a friend)

So I would say, don't advertise the fact, no real tree vehicle wraps, shooting organisation stickers in the car windows and don't get me started on Facebook pics. Even on PW how many list what they own.

Also would hate to say, but selling privately from home. Meet at an RFD or local club to carry out any transactions.

Oh, and don't think for one moment your cabinet is secure- have you seen how good the battery angle grinders are! For someone specifically targeting your guns it's 5 mins max to enter, locate, grind and remove.

Battery grinders are not even required, gun safes can be opened with far less- I posted about opening a high quality cash safe without a key the other month took 5 mins or so with a hammer and cold chisel, claw hammer could have sorted it though ( to be fair it surprised me). I don't agree with the shooting org stickers etc. these days we need to show our numbers and hiding our sport away could be counter productive. I think its time to sing about our sport and keep stum about our security arrangements personally. If the chance is there to build in a hidden safe then take it as once found it can be opened by any determined thief
