Snobbery or just rude

We are wondering into a whole new area of tradition/snobbery, that has nothing to do with Hatsans which are just plain awful.

Frankly I don't see tradition and shoot rules as snobbery, join any club and it has rules, that doesn't mean your local Casino/Social Club/Bingo Hall/etc/etc is full of snobs!

ATB!

Edit

I am fortunate to be involved with, and shoot on the best and most privileged shoot in the country, the people do not come any higher in the social strata and it is one of the least Snobbish places you could shoot! I have not seen the level of snobbery anywhere as suggested here, but on the odd occasions it has reared its head it is by those attempting to climb the social ladder, not those that were born at the top of it!

I have shot with many of the so called landed gentry, and urinated (posh for ******!) in a hedge alongside them, and got urinated (posh for ******) at a shoot dinner with a local Earl who also happened at the time to be a MEP, and would have to agree with your last paragraph in the main.

As I said, tradition is fine but not in my opinion to the extent of exclusion. On our shoot, where the Earl sometimes shoots, you can use your gun of choice. We draw the line at Kalashnikov's purely on the basis of a lack of back stops.

When I first started shooting in late 80's, I saved up £500 to buy my first Shotgun. Went in to my local gun shop in Sheffield, won't mention any names, and inquired what i could buy for this, his comment was " another one who want's a Bentley for the price of an Escort" What a ****, never been in his shop since.

Had a similar experience in York Guns when it was a 'proper' gunshop in the city itself, at the hands of a youngish lad who belittled the shotgun of a mate when he tried to part-ex it for another. The youngish (back then) bloke in question went on to bigger and better things (bigger shop anyhow) and the last I heard of him he was in America buying and selling magazines. There's obviously more money in being a newsagent. :whistling:

On the other hand...... many people sing the praises of Baikal, a very budget brand, but one that has not acquired a reputation of blowing up or jamming up. I have owned several Baikals, and wouldn't hesitate to own another, but would think twice about a Hatsan.

My mate bought a brand new Berreta auto, spent more time away than shot, it still jams up even though it cost nearly £2,000.

its probably all down to the cartridges again, Have advised him in this direction anyway.

Have Wrote about this before ,so I will not bore you with details.

I've been a costumer in both Sheffield gunshops with an Escort. They deal with them now....:) Edited by londonercsecse

I think tradition needs to be upheld in shooting.driven game should be shot with guns worthy of the quarry.at the very least a boss sxs but prefer a Holland or purdey.anyone who turns up at a game shoot with a pump action should be publicly flogged.o/u and sxs are for gentlemen.pumps and auto's are for the americans.and let them keep them.there is a place for hatsans and the like it is called a skip along with the other trash.its not snobbery its just doing it right.atb

Sorry, with all respect, I disagree. You should be able to shoot with whatever your choice of gun is. Personally I have no interest in side by sides or O/U. Does this make me an american? Edited by londonercsecse

guess that depends on whatever costume you are wearing at the time.as with everything we do in life it should be done in the correct manner with the correct equipment.and of course dressed appropriately.so please place your pump action in the skip as you leave.atb

I think you will find that 30g of no6 will kill the same out of a sxs ou or semi,so by your reasoning of "the correct equipment" all the shotguns may be used,i speak as some one who has one of each and the semi is a Hatsan, it has never let me down unlike the ou that had to have the pin springs replaced because of weak strikes.

Yes i like tradition, and for a shoot i would like to use my sxs,but there is nothing wrong with a semi if you feel that way, both can efficiently kill pheasant.

Would break the law disposing my perfectly functioning pump action gun in the skip, wouldn't I? :)

Hi

My sincere appolgie to you scully sorry my view offended

Now you've made me feel guilty! No apology needed. You are perfectly entitled to your opinions and if I'm honest I can agree up to a point. Traditions in British shooting are important, as are standards,as they are what makes British driven special, and while we do have standards I can't help feeling they sometimes, if strictly adhered to, do us no favours and close many doors especially where youngsters are concerned.

Please accept my sincere apology for going 'off on one'.

I find snobbery at some clay shoots.

One shoot I go to I pull up in my old banger and get stairs by some.

The other week my wife and I joined a group going around the ground ( a clay shoot you have to join and just go around with who ever ) their were two well to do chaps , one in the end said a few words the other totally would not look at me or my wife.

I am covered in tattoos so I think he didn't like that and my wife being a woman don't think he likes that either

Any way my wife gets a little upset by this sort of thing but I find it rather funny.

If they want to be like that then they are the ones missing out getting to know us. I can shoot just as good as them or bad as them lol

Any way I also say to my wife that they have no idea how much £££ we have in the bank

Don't judge a book by its cover springs to mind.

If you want to shoot a escort shoot and escort my mates love theirs :-)

Accepted

Should have thought of better wording

For the record I will try harder in the future

As for encourage ment to youngsters I agree I would do nothing to put them off which is why I always am available to stand with them talk to them and lend them a gun if there paper round dosent run to a double barrelled or multi shot gun that's suited to effectively killing the quarry

Hope your well

And had a good season

All the best

but seriously folks I do not think there is any such thing as snobbery in shooting.i think all that exists is the inferiority complex of some when in the company of those who have reached a time in their life when they can afford some of the finer things in life.it comes to most in the end.todays hatsan shooter is tomorrows perazzi man.and boy how you will laugh about the dark days then.also do not despair as you will also grow out of the auto/pump phase to.have fun atb

True there are also alot of cliques, you often see groups of sheep, I mean shooters all with the same gun, chokes, gear etc as soon as one buys something the rest of the sheep I mean shooters buy the same stuff!

My wife had a marvellous time on the driven pheasant this season using both her o/u and semi auto and is looking forward to the same next season :-) don't think that the pheasants where are worried if it's a sbs o/u semi auto or pump action. They come down no matter what you use if you use it proplely.

So what do you think when I shoot the Pheasant or Partridge or duck or goose on the ground with a rifle in the name of pest control, is that ok with your wife?
