Poacher
I live in Cornwall and relativey close to a wind farm, they don't bother me, i happen to think are quite impressive things and i have no objection with them, although one thing i will say is why do they insist on putting them in the best spots of the countryside they can find,,,why don't they put them in the sea they would be just as effecitve. :look:
Axe
I don't live near one, infact there are none around us what so ever. As long as they dont disturb people I cant see a problem. Infact I would be all for them as long as they are positioned away from built up areas and kept from areas of natural beauty. I don't know why they don't put more out to sea, this to me seems the perfect place for them.
steve_k
i find that they are interesting as long as they dont want to put them on my shooting ground! :look:
SNAKEBITE
I do not live near a wind farm. In my opinion a wind farm is a good idea as long as it is in the right place (not just a windy one either before anyone gets lippy!!). If it gives cheaper power then that is good. However I do remember reading that they are not that efficient, they are noisey and they are just an excuse for the government to get "we are doing our bit for a greener world". JohnGalway
I love them, they absolutely facinate me. My girlfriend reckons I have a radar for them as whenever we travel I'm always spotting them :look: I'd seriously look into setting up a windfarm if I didn't live in an area of XYZ outstanding natural beauty (ya can't eat it though, that's not beat mis spelt either...) pin
They seem to put them where its windy, which is where I go with my gliders. So from a completely selfish point of view I don't like them :look: Out at sea, always windy out there
Owenwill
Got about 30 out at sea few miles off the coast here near Rhyl, people still complain about them out there, can't see the problem really, they're a lot prettier than Rhyl :look: they look closer than they are the size of them mind, was fascinating watching them being built

Wookie
They are building a small one in the Fens just north of Huntingdon and no one really seems to care. However, the one nearer to work caused no end of trouble from the NIMBYs. Massive protests when they found out it would make their houses less valuable etc The thing that got me was the new a few months ago from people near the windfarm down in Cornwall near Redruth. Apparently the greens were campaigning for years to get it and then, when it was built, they wanted it taken down as the farm made the landscape look untidy. Personally, I think it looks quite nice and spending a nice afternoon out in the sun with those in the background would be quite fun. Millomite
I have one a couple of miles away and 2 more across the estuary from where I live. They are not too bad, but they are noisy things when up close. We are getting another windfarm built of the coast too
chippy18
I have one a couple of miles away and 2 more across the estuary from where I live. They are not too bad, but they are noisy things when up close. We are getting another windfarm built of the coast too I had to carry out some maintenance work at the offshore wind farm between Herne Bay and Whitstable about 5 months ago. I was talking to to one of the control engineers there and he said that the national aim is to be producing 5/7 % of the countries total electricity by 2010. He also said that there was going to be a study carried out about placing loads of them all the way around the coast. 5/7% might not seem a lot at the moment but who knows in a few years time we may be grateful of clean power sources. The farm at Whitstable is about 5 mile of shore so noise is not a prob there. In fact there was only really a droning noise when i was actually in the base of the tower. :look:
Highlander
Beats me why we need any wind farms here in the UK...what with all the hot air on here! :look:
Ferret Master
I walked among some in France and they weren't too noisy just like wooshing sound but I can't remember how windy they were. I have heard some horror stories about them knocking geese out of the sky on migration routes? As for looking ugly, they aren't really any worse than pylons. :look: Or you could just paint them a nice colour! FM
Cranfield
I have seen a lot of wind farms and I can't think of any that improve the landscape one iota. What they contribute to the Nations electricity needs as against their installation cost , ongoing maintenance costs, disruption and general spoiling of the landscape, is negligible. I think they are ugly , noisy and obtrusive things. Just thought I would balance the opinions. :look:

naddan28
I live have one off the coast of westgate near me, along with the ones mentioned above between whistable and herne bay. I have no problem with them, I like them in fact. I feel they look clean and crisp, whilst providing electricity! Its not as if the areas of coast would be put to better use, just jet skis. I think they are ugly , noisy and obtrusive things. Just thought I would balance the opinions. They have recently completed the wind farm at North Pickenham in Norfolk. I think there are 8 turbines on it and they are around the 350 feet tall mark. Because it is so flat around here, you can see them for miles. They look quite striking and in my opinion peaceful. I am not too sure about how much electricity they produce and must say that I have never seem them all rotating at once. I suspect that it will take forever to produce power of equivalent value to the erection costs. The first one they built around here was at Swaffham. It is right next to the Waitrose supermarket car park. The noise produced is only a slight "whoosh" as each blade passes by the column. I haven't heard anyone around here complain about them. I would rather have a field of turbines near my house than a field of *****'s Waitrose has got both
