Also Bob Dylan, Shane McGowan, Derrick ***** (aka Fish), Chris Diffiord, Paul Heaton, Lily Allen. I could go on. Some songs are about the lyrics and what they mean/mean to you, other songs are just about the music/tune. Love Ac/Dc for their music but love Dylan for his lyrics if you know what I mean.

Absolutely spot on. A lot of it is about age / stage / situation. Clapton's "Layla" sticks in my mind not for the lyrics but for the energy of the music.

No-one has mentioned the late Gerry rafferty yet, but "Baker Street" must stand out for its lyrics as much as for that unmistakeable saxophone introduction.

Dylan probably produced a lot more diamonds than dross - but he did knock out some awful dross.

And have a listen to some of the stuff Kris Kristofferson wrote during his many years of inebriety! "Sunday Mornin Comin Down".

Napoleon the XIVth,

I've lived in apartments, I've lived in a home
I travelled in trailers when I used to roam
But now in these places you won't have me dead
'Cause I'm happy I live in a split-level head

I do what I want to, no worries, no care
If anyone bugs me I climb up my stairs
Way up to a level where I feel no threat
'Cause I'm happy I live in a split-level head

If you're trying something, I couldn't care less
I don't rush for busses and trains are a mess
There's no one to care for, I don't need a bed
'Cause I'm happy I live in a split-level head

I like how I'm living, I'm nobody's slave
My head's above water, so don't make a wave
There are no doors to lock and no dogs to be fed
'Cause I'm happy I live in a split-level head

So why should I move when the neighborhood's right?
No taxes to pay and no landlord to fight
Now I call this living, what's more, like I said
'cause Im happy I live in a split-level head

Now you keep your ulcers, your ills, and what, too
You sure couldn't have them and live like I do
You think I hace problems, but you do instead
'Cause I'm happy I live in a split-level head

I live with two people, I like both of them
He likes both of me and I like both of him
They're my alter-ego and to them I'm wed
'Cause I'm happy I live in a split-level head

There's no simple status in my neighborhood
And its that kind of thinking, that keeps it so good
And I don't take the lead when I like to be led
'Cause I'm happy I live in a split-level head

Yep classic...I'm sure we will all be singing it in 100 years time...NOT

I appreciate music is a very subjective art but to be blunt I think that's a load of bloody rubbish

Modern era, Eminem would be up there I think. And still so young....

Marshall Mathers - no doubt.

eminem hands down. the man is a lyrical genius

I'm not a hardened hip-hop fan, but I've got to agree.

LS

Much like LS, I generally don't like rap/hip-hop, call it what you will, but Eminem's in a different league. The mans lyrics are, at times, stunning!

Even famous poets have praised him, that old boy said a few years ago, put his words on paper and take away the beat and he would be a world class poet.

older folk who arnt fans of rap don't quite get it, eminem doesn't clam to be a gangster, he has no gang ties, no gun shot wounds, just a broke white boy from a trailor park in Detroit who get bullied all his life, and wrote it all down on paper. and in doing that was the only white artist to brake into black rap and hip hop, he's very impressive, most of his music videos have over 100,000,000 this on has 180,000,000 views, for one mans words.
