My Mrs got her ticket in 13 days from GMP last year with the following slots (albeit after doing a probation at a club);

22 self loading LBP

44/44mag LBP (recently varied to 223)

308 bolt action

7.62x54r bolt action

44/45 muzzle loading revolver

Plenty of moderators

A shared storage which allows her the use of my 6 slots of which 5 are centre fire

6 months later she's filled every slot except the 22LBP and mods

Purely out of interest is that Club/Target use only, or are all those approved for rabbit/deer/etc?

Purely target shooting on her side, maybe the OP got his FAC down the target route and wants to jump across, I'm just making a point that it is possible to get a FAC with full bore centrefire in a reasonable amount of time (probation period aside)

I mainly do target shooting but have an open ticket with 22LR but closed ticket with 223 for fox/AOLQ

As I'm sure you know club/target tends to be a lot easier provided you are a club member and have completed a Probationary period, but that means 3 month minimum, my club is 6 months!

As a Home Office Approved Club Secretary I have noticed over the last few years how much more vigorously the Police are enforcing the existing rules, hence, anyone who joins my club and survives the Probation gets a virtual rubber stamp to a FAC!........

.............. BUT...ONLY for Target/Club of course!

To the OP..

There are plenty of sceptics here who are a little surprised that on 23 Feb "I don't currently have a FAC no, I am looking to apply for one in the near future however." and by 28 March you have one with a slot for .308 and are talking about Big Game hunting.

It would be easy to shut everyone up by posting a picture of the relevant part of your FAC!

Just remember most squadies only regularly use a 5.56 or .223 rifle machine guns are a different beast, only the lucky few get a real rifle in .308 (7.62) or .338.

I'm a member of a club based on a military range and I've seen what happens when squaddies get their hands on a real rifle . I've been in the butts and had to use the target frames afterwards, or what's left of them. Must be that useless Radway Green ammo :whistling: .

If we are to be serious then .308 is the best all-round deer calibre there is IMO. Personally, for plains game I'd have a .338 Win Mag over a .300 Win mag.

You can't slate Radway Green ammo - it goes bang doesn't it ! :)

My experience with RG 7.62, (still have around 850 rounds left from 1985 vintage) is that it really is pretty good.:good:

The RG 5.56 on the other hand............

Hey guys,

I was looking to invest in a Hunting Rifle, I am looking at a Remington 700 or similar, and was wandering what caliber you guys use? I've narrowed it down to 7mm or .308, what are the pros and cons for either of them.

Thank you

Ok he's edited the original post but he is asking a question. and as such I reply probably 308 because there are loads of bullet tips available but 270 is a cracking calibre. because of the stupid blurb about the 270 there are a lot available for silly cheap money. Hail the mighty 270. It can be reloaded to a soft fox load or stepped up to the point of wow that recoil hurt.

Cheers for that mate I'd not read that thread. I still thinks its possible though he's got a mentor, forces background and some seem to have faster turnaround. maybe I'm being naive but I like to think most people wouldn't lie about something so pointless an fac application. Hopefully in a week or two he'll have found a rifle and be sticking up a picture in sporting pictures, or he'll be sat in his room covered in camo paint stripping his ak47 replica watching full metal jacket again!

I got 308 on my first FAC along with a 22rf but that was 20 years ago and I was living on a farm at the time.

from experience of friends both serving and ex police if anything they have a harder time. most recent being a former firearms officer later an instructor refused a 303 air rifle for shooting geese on a reservoir but given 223 for the same. the air rifle would be safer in the location.

As for the OP being a serving soldier do we know what mob he's with yet. Or is that classified :ninja: ???

If he tells us..... he'll then have to kill us! :ninja:

At what point does he say he's applying for his fac? As far as I can see the op ask what people prefer for big game, he's then clarified he already has an fac with slot for 308 and a mentor but wanted clarification before parting with his money so what's the issue?

My original fac application took less than 4 weeks from interview to landing on my mat does that make me a Walt? Oh and for the record I'm a atheists so have no religious ties to the op I just find trial by pw a bit harsh!

My original FAC took 7 days from interview to ticket... that's not what we are talking about... how

jesus! you guys are something else! A chap asks a simple question and rather than give simple answers or even close to that he gets cross examined, judged, motives questioned, criticised etc etc and now you're telling him to "prove" to people he doesnt and wont ever know that he is what he is and has what he has!

its a virtual forum!

So what if he's turns out not to be what he states, his motives may be as simple as wanting to fit in, a bit too keen or anything as equally trivial.

Its sad where in a forum of equals (we are all equal) that more often than not when a question or anything is asked the first reply is a question critiquing the OP's question!

A bunch of sceptical grumpy old farts :)

These are all used in a controlled environment try using the .308 deer with the correct authoroty it won't be given without any experience

Deershooter

Deershooter

I had a .22 rimfire and a .270 centrefire on my first ever FAC and they weren't for target shooting, they were for vermin/pest control and deer.
