The thing is i don't know which one is better,ive done some research and now im confused. i have been told the disco td5 is the better one and the 20l free lander is under powerd but all ive read is all the problems the td5 has which has sort off put me off a bit. Couple of minor issues but nothing I couldn't fix myself. and I'm no mechanic Parts readily available and not too expensive either. What sort of year or budget are you thinking? Well maintained the engines are bomb proof. They are equally good on road as they are off. Apologies to those with Freelanders (older type) but they don't compare, drive both and you'll see what I mean. Get yourself signed up to TheD2BoysClub forum, ask questions and know what to look for and what to avoid. Chances are you'll get someone local to you to look over the car with you. FatFreddysCat Posted April 26, 2014 Report Share Posted April 26, 2014 I've had both. 1995 Disco, took it up to 165K miles before the floor of the boot rusted out and there was no more rust left to weld the rust back onto. It was mostly reliable but with minor electrical niggles, engine always had an oil leak from somewhere and corrosion was a problem around the door frames. Good off and on road but only 30mpg. Now have a 2006 Freelander now on 139K, no problems apart from usual service parts, just had new front discs. does 36 to 38mpg. It's more of a compromise vehicle than the Disco, quieter and easier to drive on the road but less capable off road. Mine is mostly a road car but it also gets used for muddy farm tracks, wet fields etc with no problems. More ground clearance would help. FatherandSon Posted April 26, 2014 Report Share Posted April 26, 2014 I've had both. I had a TD5 and sold it when it cost over £100 to fill the tank, it was luxury though. We got a Freelander and had it a few weeks. It was immaculate with only 20,000 miles on but it was fault after fault. I took it back to the garage I bought it from and took my trade in back. Scottoj18 Posted April 26, 2014 Report Share Posted April 26, 2014 Iv had a freelander x reg 100,005 miles for just over a year, it's been good to me up to the start of this year. First the inter cooler hose went so £30 on new ones. Then last week the clutch master cylinder went £50. Two new tyres today (part worn) £80. New pads and shoes needed before it's mot next month around £40. But I like it it's not to noise, gets me on and off the field, the back window goes down so I can shoot from inside, heated seats and parts are cheap. Personally I drive the outlaws disco and hate it costs them £500 every service with a specialist who does seem to sort problems before it breaks down. ferguson_tom Posted April 27, 2014 Report Share Posted April 27, 2014 For your budget i would stick with a well maintained TD5 disco especially the miles you are doing it will see years of service. If you look on autotrader there are loads of discos with over 150000 miles whereas there are very few freelanders that can handle that sort of mileage. Our td4 freelander used to do 35mpg so only 5-7mpg better than a disco. What ever landrover you buy you will have to get your hands dirty even if its just sorting small electrical niggles, but the list for common feelander issues is a lot longer than that for the disco. It was a right slug when I got it but had it remapped and it made the world of difference to everyday driving. I use it on my game shoot for keepering work, I fitted Goodrich AT tyres on 16" rims to get me round the Northamptonshire version of the Somme. I've driven it to Slovenia and back! without a hiccup and it'll be going to Italy in August. I've had a few problems but nothing my specialist can't fix and it's without the stealer's coronary inducing invoices. It's a very comfortable drive too. Just don't let the wife drive it, she won't want to give it back. not when you look at what needs to be done, diesel pipes rotting, airbags failing, and loads and loads of niggles every service has "common" faults, yes its getting on on an x plate but with 60K on the clock and garaged its far from used. Alycidon Posted April 28, 2014 Report Share Posted April 28, 2014 (edited) I have had three Discos and a Defender since 1993. First Disco got knicked and stripped after a few weeks. Second one I ran for 274,000 ( a 200 Auto), just sold the third one, a TD5 auto at 263.000. Now running a Defender as I here that the TD6 Discos are money pits. Overall up to 180,000 the Disco deisels are fine, both mine needed replacement injectors at that time, both sets came from breakers. Over 180k then niggles mainly electrical start to creep in. But they are comfortable machines that are pretty cheap to run and very versatile. Go for an auto diesel with cruise if you can, manual gearboxs in Discos were a weak spot. Thats exactly what I use mine for and towing big trailers for my business 5 nights a week. ATs are ideal, last 120k if looked after, personally I removed the CAT after a spate of local thefts, went hell of a lot better without it and sailed through its MOT.
