sandspider
Hi all Been toying with the idea of a semi auto to go with my bolt action 22lr. I think I can justify if by using one for night vision set up and one for daytime. Anyway, I could get a 10/22, but don't really want to have to customise it to get it accurate. Can anyone reccomend a decent, accurate, reliable semi straight out of the box? Probably second hand. Budget 250 ish maybe... Cheers for any suggestions. Oh, one other thing - its not a variation as I'd need another slot. Do I just contact my force and ask for a second slot? And pay presumably? Ttfjlc
Can't go far wrong with a cz/BRNO, my dad and I share one and he bought it new in the mid nineties and it's still going strong having had thousands of rounds through it

Yes You have to apply for it and unfortunately pay the fee.

sandspider
Cheers all. Are the czs hard to keep clean / cycling smoothly?
sandspider
And will they cycle subs?
thepasty
no and yes Mine has subsonic stamped on the barrel and spits them out without issue.
welshwarrior
If you don't mind tinkering 10/22s are great if you just want a gun to shot and shot accurately CZ but not as much fun IMHO.

Or more fun to tinker with?
will_gleave
Remington Speedmaster 522, not joking probably one of the cheapest semi's around, I've had one for 3 years first gun i ever bought, its so easy to strip, cycles anything you can put through it, never had a jam, no mag sticking like the 10-22, and a lot more accurate with no tinkering needed. And because its cheap you don't mind bashing it out and about the field, many rabbits have felt the wrath of this fella
turbo33
I used to shoot with a mate who had a 10/22. It was fed a huge diet of winnie subs....and over the thousands of rounds we fired, it never missed a beat It was superbly accurate. Accounted for a colossal amount of rabbits The only minor thing was to keep the magazines clean and away from a gritty environment, but youwould do that with all anyway. Maybe he was lucky, but it wiped the floor with his Anschutz, which is why he sold the annie and got the 10/22.
welshwarrior
As Turbo said keep the mag clean and feed it rounds it likes. I loved the shooting it and tinkering.
thepasty
If you buy a standard 10/22 off the shelf it wont be as good as the 511 or 581 (I havent handled the newer 512), you will then throw a load of money at it to get it as good as the 511, you could then throw another world of money at it (match barrels etc) make it better than a 511. The quality and engineering of the 511 is in a different league compared to the 10/22, its built to last with not a single bit of plastic to be found (the 10/22 is becoming more plasticy by the year). When I was looking for a 22 semi I was hell bent on getting a 10/22 (star-y eyed by all the after market gear available) , that was until I handled a couple, shot a few and compared it side by side with the 511 (and a few other offerings including the Speedmaster talked about above). The rest is history and I've never wished I had the 10/22, I'd sooner have a Speedmaster
Dekers
and if you just want no frills, it works out of the box, cheap and cheerful, Magtech 7022.................... Same gun as this but a good £100 less!
sandspider
Thanks again for the input boys and girls. I am leaning towards a CZ 511 at the moment - my B/A 22 is also a CZ, and it's served me well, so I hope another one would be as good. Also, my local RFD has one in - just need to check that it will handle subs. Having said that, the Magtech does look good value! Anyone else got one, and how do you find them? As ever, I'll have to see what's actually available once I can sort out the slot, which I guess will take a month or two.
webber
Have a look at the Sabatti. and then be aware that most of the Ruger after market bits fit it! I have one in stock. webber
sandspider
You had to go and confuse me further, Webber! Thanks! I'm not looking to get a gun that I need to modify to make accurate, but even so, can you PM me a price for it, including delivery to a Bristol RFD? Is it in good condition, screw cut, does it come with a mod / scope etc? Thanks.
saddler
"Best" or current mfg. being pushed by the importers? One of the BEST ever .22's can be picked up from about £50 used. Remington Nylon 66 - I think the gun still holds a world record - & over a million made IF I was after a modern reliable .22 using magazines I'd hunt for a T/C R55 model, the heavy barrel one is nice The CZ 511/581 are great guns, BUT, try to find spare magazines!! For purely hunting use, there's nothing wrong with a gun that uses a tube mag.; as the issue with some makes that use box magazines, is the magazines may be next to impossible to find or very very expensive. Imperfection
I have a CZ 511 and it cycles Winchester & Eley sub's perfectly fine-the only brand it wont cycle are CCI. Cleaning is easy. You loosen a screw with a 5p piece, remove action from stock then blast all the muck out with WD40 using the force of the spray can then leave to drain upside down. However,i will be honest and say i've only cleaned mine 3 times and it still keeps going... Accurate, very cheap (auctions sell them for peanuts),but their achilles is the magazine as CZ stopped producing them in 1995.Im lucky and got 2 with the rifle and the worst bit is they are unique to this model only-no other CZ mag will fit. sandspider
Thanks all for the continued suggestions. Any more for any more?! Yes, I'd prefer a magazine fed rifle. And not a "tacticool" military clone thing. Will keep looking...
sandspider
Has anyone tried the CZ512? How does it compare to the 511? (I think the magazines for the 512 match those for the CZ452, so I've already got a few of those...) Thank you.
