ditchman Posted July 28, 2014 Report Share Posted July 28, 2014 During the last few still warm nights we have had.... i have heard a noise late at night thro to 2 o'clock best way i can describe it is ...its like a very soft muted referees whistle and lasts for about 2-3 secs......it is bugging me ...is it a frog ? the next door has a small pond but the noise dosnt seem to be coming from that area....it is a familar sound a sound which i have heard in africa on many occasions but not here any ideas ? Having marvelled at it I gently lifted it and dropped it onto the lower leaves of an elder bush just outside the door. There was a sudden slapping sound and the Cricket was slurped into the gaping maw of a ruddy great Toad sat underneath the leaves. I hadn't seen it. There are a few loons on PW though!! Nightjars can make some horrible noises like someone being strangled - arn't they also called " goatsuckers" ? Nightjars can make some horrible noises like someone being strangled - arn't they also called " goatsuckers" ? now you mention it i have heard that before......back in "ye old england times"....the nightjar used to hang around the legs of livestock late in the evening...the locals thought is was suckling the livestock but they were there to catch the bugs and flies the animals kicked up and attracted think it was something like that .............
