eddoakley
For some reason I have found myself wanting to buy a cayenne. Nothing flash or expensive just a 2003-2004 model and probably under £6k. There are loads about at that sort of money. I know some of the downsides re running costs ( 4.5l v8 is gonna be thirsty) and repair costs but I dont see me doing more than a few thousand miles per year so can live with that. But I wondered if anyone here has one around that age and what they think of it. Should I get one? Cheers Edd
Assured
A friend of mine had one, very nice car but as you say very expensive to run, which is why I bought the touareg, very similar but being 3.0 diesel v6 a lot cheaper to run. Mungler
Awesomely fast. Client had one and had to get rid of it because it was too easy to go super fast. You can get 1 owner low milers for not much money with massive engines because no one wants the petrol bill or potential repair bills. The same goes for large engined Rangies - my mate got a minter (vogue with all the toys) for £8k - 2 owner, fsh and sub 60k on the clock and I think it was a 54 or 55 plate. andypaint
I've had 3 of them. Fast, handles well boot is a bit on small side. But it cost me a fortune in tyres and autos can have expensive problems. But they no dearer to run than a range rover and much more reliable. oscarsdad
I have been seriously considering one - does anyone have any idea how much an LPG conversion would cost on one? If I was going to get one it would have to be a turbo...may as well have all of the power!
Hamster
You can get ready LPG converted ones easily enough, they make a lot of sense these things, a bit like an old Lexus with FSH for a couple of grand.

andypaint
A few things to be aware of on the turbo model is fuel (15mpg) Tyres £170 each and that's cheap ones and they don't last long and wears 4 at a time. Brakes don't last and are stupid money to service them. It's just the turbo model that is very expensive to run as nothing is normal about it when it comes to getting parts. eddoakley
Just come back to this topic and although I have been too busy to pick one up I have seen plenty on the bay and the like and will definitely get one in the next week or two. I have heard the horror stories about running cost, especially brakes and tyres but I just dont do enough milage to worry about that. I have also been told to avoid the turbo model and the 3.2 and stick with the 4.5 v8. Anyone else want to add to that? Also if anyone knows for a decent one for sale please feel free to drop me a line on here. Thanks Edd
robbiep
I knew someone that had a Turbo Cayenne (bought brand new), back in 2005 or so. Much like you, he said that he wasn't bothered about the running costs - and he isn't. He owns a chain of nightclubs, and has done very nicely over the years. He got rid of it after 3 months. 12 (yes, twelve) mpg. On a motorway run. Around town, more like 10 mpg. It had a 100 litre tank, and he reckoned he was spending more time filling it up than driving it. Fill up, North Wales to Manchester and back, reading 1/4 tank. He changed to a 3.6 TDV8 Rangerover, and tripled his mileage range.
Mentalmac
Sometimes there's more too it that the MPG. I had an RX8, and would easily have a low MPG car again for the fun of driving it. If you have a Cayenne, you'll likely have a 'normal' daily driver too and the Cayenne is just for a laugh - sod the mpg, treat yourself to some good loud engine noise! I have no interest in racing so dont care what is faster than the cayenne. Its nice to be able to reach the speed limit quickly but thats enough for me. I have seen so many possibilities now and am sick of looking. There is a tidy looking example ont e bay thats close enough to collect, the seller is hoping for just a bit more than I am willing to pay but I am winning at the moment so will wait and see. Other than that a few mates in the trade are trying to find one for me so hopefully in the next week or so I will have one. Then I just need to sell a couple of things to make room!!! Anyone after a nice L200???
eddoakley
Well I finally picked up a cayenne this week and wow!! What a bit of kit it is! Not looking forward to paying for the fuel but as I will do very limited milage I dont think it will be an issue. Its a whole lot of car for not a lot of money. Just a few bits I would like to add now. Edd

a.f.dickin
You will love a cayenne. I have been fortunate to have 3 Porsches, currently a 997 4S and having driven all models, including the cayenne on and off road at the silverstone off road test track. I was never bothered by a big 4x4 in any shape and dismissed them thinking porsche was sports car only., full stop. Then I drove one...... I will definately own a cayenne one day, I cannot bring myself away from sports cars just yet, but it was the most big, relaxing, powerful, handling, capable car I have ever driven ( and I would haven't have a wallowing range rover that can't go round corners... Que abuse) it changed my mind about 4 x 4's. Regarding servicing and bills, they aren't bad, and their reputation for this is slight obscured by people who haven't owned one, yes parts are expensive, but servicing is 2 years at £600 with a good local porsche specialist, hey are incredibly reliable and nothing will compare to the feeling you have driving one, and on your side you have a lack of depreciation. Porsches aren't for everyone but if you enjoy driving and not following the pack, and will give a little to appreciate that a porsche is not a "normal" but still everyday car you will and probably are loving it! eddoakley
wheres the nice l200 for sale? Not advertised yet. Will get it on here over the weekend. 2003 warrior 140k I have had it 4 years and it hasnt missed a beat. Serviced it and thats all. Really reluctant to sell but as i just dont use it and now have the porsche to jot use as well then it needs to go. Keep a look out in other sales tomorrow. Rascal
I have a Cayenne S (4.5 V8) It does around 18 mpg. Plenty of power for towing, reasonable off road with ATs. Mine has 20" alloys and I've put some Grabber AT's on it. They work well not that noisy, if you don't expect it to handle as well as with decent road tyres but still gives plenty of confidence. You will get over 30k miles out of a set. One tip is make sure you change the oil every year at least and use a decent a synthetic oil. This will help reduce the risk of bore scoring that can be a problem on the V8 S. Enjoy it mate
