kiffy
im not sure yet where im going, original plan was we where going to the dyfi estuary but our club took on another area last year the dysynni estuary which is supposed to be quite good for duck. after getting flooded out from the dyfi on our last day of the season we went for a look ready for this year but not having clearly defined parking areas and a rather unfriendly farmer we couldnt find it.. but after complaints our club has organised a tour for members on saturday so we are of up for a look and may if all goes well do that one on monday
fenboy
Unfortunatly I will miss the 1st as I will be working it will be the 5th before I have chance to go , I should manage two or three flights a week though . I hope to to better this season as last was a poor one for me , I am still very much a newbie so I hope to continue with the learning curve of finding my way around the wash . At least I went into wildfowling with my eyes open , I was expecting to shoot very little and that was the case , but its worth the walk just to be out there at daybreak My advive for anyone having their first season is go in with both eyes and ears open , there will be some good people offer sound advice , dont think you will run before you can walk. figgy
Fenboy I was in Lincoln this weekend and if the numbers of geese I saw inland were an indicator your in for a cracking season if they head out later on. Some very big skeins over the stubbles. It will probably be the fifth or seventh for my first flight. kiffy
fenboy, 2 or 3 flights a week? lucky ******... its 80 quid in fuel for us so we do once a week or more likely once a fortnight last season was my first, but from talking to my shooting partner and other club members it does seem that it wasnt a good year for us, mainly due to flooding everywhere and the birds had plenty of places to go.. hopefully its gona be a better one this year
ayano3
I will be out on the 1st somewhere. Not made my mind up yet where to go but traditionally it's shep whites. Hopefully I will have a decent season and meet a few new faces as well as usual regular guys. You tend to come across several different people when you do fifty plus trips out a season. Enjoy your sport and think of those less fortunate than ourselves who are for whatever reason are no longer able to enjoy our wonderful pastime. Big Mat
I will be out on the first somewhere, i am have a fair idea of where for the morning flight but will be trying a different marsh for the evening flight. I have a few little things left to sort out for later in the season but i am ready to go fowling!
kent
Will be out, not 100% sure were yet. In fairness the first of sept is an event and the first of Jan is wildfowling, last season I had to stop around Jan as my shoulder was troubling me too much so I am raring to go this year. Here's hoping for less rain and flooding and more wind and frost.
strangford wildfowler
Hopefully out on the first, somewhere not sure have to do some reccon work. marsh man
Last year I gave the first day a miss , in fact I didn't go for five weeks until I had some water on the marsh then I started to go nearly every night on different marshes. At the moment I am still in pigeon mode and after getting up early for the first or( second if it was on a Sunday)for 50yrs I think I deserve a lay in , but good luck to you guys who will be out and lets hope you all get a few shots. kiffy
lets hope you all get a few shots. its strange but days out when i get very few shots off can be disheartening but wildfowling trips, with a three and a half hour each way trip, stomping through the mud carrying god knows how much weight in gear and not firing a shot doesnt worry me one bit, i love the whole day... the company, the souroundings, the sea air and seeing wildlife that in my normal day to day life i would never see

If I did not have such a bad case of goose fever I would join in a flash. Edited August 25, 2014 by Terry P
birdsallpl
I won't be out on the first. I think I have only been out once on the first in 30 years. My Wildfowling season doesn't start until the Pinks arrive and even then after a couple of weeks for them to settle. However whenever you start to go out it is always exciting and rewarding, so good luck to all you guys going on the first, as Arthur Cadman would say " straight powder and mud on your boots"
kiffy
theres a whole lot of geese on the dyfi, we several times last year saw the sky change colour as massive amounts of canadas took off, flew down the railway line and into the rspb sanctaury... the geese know what their doing there and that they where safe if the followed the railway line
Konnie
normally go on a drain inland on the 1st, but no ducks have gone think its down to the large areas of stubble this year, but will be on the marsh for evening flight hope you all have a safe morning

I was talking to an old boy last time I was there, he loathes the canadas and blames them for the demise of the wigeon shooting on the marsh. I have found over the years new people who come into the sport normally last for 3 or 4 years if they are still keen after that there is a good chance they will be hooked for life. Nobody is a expert on wild fowling just that some are better at it than others.
fenboy
I agree its certainly not a easy sport , I certainly have great admiration to those that shoot consistently well on the foreshore. I count myself a fairly decent shot and when pigeon shooting I usually average better than 2 for 1 , I found it very difficult on the marsh , the chances come and go in a instant and its very difficult to get a good swing going when you up to the knees in mud . So the shooting is difficult enough before you start considering things like getting in the right location , the long walks , early mornings , wind , rain and tides , whats not to like hey ! anser2
Returning to the marshes where i started wildfowling as a teenager back in the 1960s in the Broads for the first morning. The tides are not right for the first week on my section of coast until the second week of the season.

Fal
I'll be out on the 1st for the first time ever. The dogs ready to go, I'm dying to get his first marsh shot duck to retrieve. I'm not sure weather I'll be out before work, or wait until the evening and go then, I will probably end up out before work though, can't see much sleep happening the night before! Good luck if you're out!
