AberFowl
Hi all. I have been looking at getting a newer pump action. My old manufrance is no longer really fit for the job. My pump action is and will be my 'duck gun' mostly.. There will be the odd bit of vermin shooting also. The 2 guns I am looking into are Benelli super nova Remi 887 nitromag I would like the option of aftermarket chokes for my steel loads...are they readily available for either of these guns? Thanks
Kalahari
The SuperNova is a great bit of kit. The other thing you have forgotten is the Browning Pump. I have one it is great. Proper safety mounted where you would expect it to be, on the tang. Bottom eject so it is ambidextrous. Worth a look. David. throdgrain
The Supernova is a good gun, but I think the 870 is a better gun, and better than the newer 887 too.
IEH
Supernova! Uses mobilchokes so plenty of aftermarket options. Edited August 29, 2014 by IEH
Field Shooter
Dont know anything about the Remi 887 nitromag but the Supernover is a very good gun several of the lads at the club have them, have you also considered a Mossberg 535 or 835 Ultimag, both guns steel proofed/3.5 inch chambered with the 835 being backbored ? wildrover77
Forget both, get a browning bps. the bps like the Ithaca and a lot of older pumps is head and shoulders above any of the modern pumps in terms of build quality. Manufacturers just can not afford the machining cost with modern designs. Noticed that a gun shop local to me had got hold of some bps pumps they are not often imported into the uk. Scully
Is there a 'bad' pump out there nowadays? Saying that, being an older bloke I tend to opt for the older, well established makes and models such as the Win' Model 12 and 1300xtr, Remi' 870, Mossi' 500, Browning and Ithaca or Savage. If I had the money and wanted one as a tool on my rounds as a 'keeper or other such job, I think I'd opt for the Benelli model with the semi/pump capability in S1. If I wanted something much cheaper, I like the look of the Hatsan pumps, but there are also many cheap and time worn but perfectly serviceable good quality old school models out there. Most RFD's have something tucked away in a room somewhere if you ask.
kennett
Not suggesting you should buy it, but I have the 3 1/2" chambered winchester sxp as my marsh, pigeon and Keepering rounds gun and can't fault it
phaedra1106
I'd look at the Browning, Ithaca or older Remingtons, not the 887 or 1187 variants, they're just not as well made as the earlier 870's were. I have an 870 Wingmaster Deluxe in 4+1 (or 5+1 with Comp-X carts!) and will be very reluctantly selling it (when I eventually get my Fac back from Durham) as I've had to switch to semi-auto due to increasing left shoulder problems :( I've used it a couple of times for PSG with a 10+1 extension tube fitted, now that really is fun!. p.s. I also have a Super Nova up for sale if you're interested Edited August 30, 2014 by phaedra1106
Harnser
Remington 870 wing master . Proberbly the best trombone gun ever made . Harnser
cody123
Same as Kennett, I have a Winchester SXP 3 1/2" and cant fault it
theshootist
Out of the two guns you list and for the purpose you intend its the Benelli all the way. I'm not saying its a lot better than a Remington, but better it is.
AberFowl
Thanks again for all advice. I went round a few shops and shouldered a few pumps..I finally made the decision and bought a 2nd hand Winchester pump, multichoke 3inch magnum proofed. Plenty of meat on the barrel and looks like it will take the 'abuse' It fits well which is most important to me and I feel safe putting steel and hevi shot through it..the 10 might just stay in the cabinet this season Thanks again for all advice.
