Daveo26
Not traditional wildfowling no. But hopefully he will be worked on ducks all being well amongst all other game. I just took a liking to the breed after seeing one and reading up on them. Anything to look out for?

Fal
I was torn between a Chessie or a Lab for my first gun dog, after reading into it a lot I decided on a Lab. Next dog will be a chessie though, cracking looking dog! Good luck with him!

Good luck with him! Thanks pal, I think you made a good choice, everything iv read and people iv spoken to say they need an experianced owner.I'm already sensing it's going to be a challenge and iv had everything from working terriers to foxhound pups. All been well in a couple of years I'll have a sensible working companion! He's a fine looking chap. Lovely dogs, ours is a great worker and a wonderful companion. Thanks zapp, where did yours come from?

loriusgarrulus
He might have got it mixed up with an alligator. They can come in various shades of brown. They tend not to be fluffy though.
Big Mat
No mate it's a dog, crocs are more green coloured Some of the fowlers i shoot with refer to them as crocodiles due to hearing bad things about their temperments. The only ones i have come across have been big softies! I have got abit of a soft for them but i'll stick to my labs for now!
anthonychez
My chesapeake is my first gun dog . I was also told not to get one as a first gundog also . I made sure she was well socialised as a pup and just enjoyed training her.you do have to be on top of them with regards to training as they are quite stubborn but are very eager to please. My bitch is an all round gundog mostly used for ducks and geese, but loves beating and despite their large build have very good stamina and will run around all day.if you want to Use a chessie to its full potential give it plenty of waterwork.i have had the crocodile jokes.and there is alot of bad press that goes with them , but youd be surprised how my lab lads say" ive always fancied a chessie. I thought they were all visous. I think im getting a chessie after seeing her." Good look with him and put plenty of time into training as you only get out what you put in. fenboy
A very cute looking puppy that , I think they are a lovely looking dog , perhaps a strange choice if you are not going to be doing any foreshore work but that is of course your prerogative. Good luck with his training and I look forward to seeing some pics of him as he grows.
mudpatten
Great dogs. Had `em since the mid `70`s. Just remember that, as I`m sure you will, it is`nt a fluffy brown labrador. He will have a completely different outlook on life. You`re starting out on a great adventure. Believe me! P.S, don`t forget that you can give it a bath with proper shampoo every few months which will do it`s especially oily coat no harm whatsoever, but it will prevent the dog from stinking out the house/car. loriusgarrulus
Try Wahl coppertones dog shampoo, doesn't dry the coat out too much and it dilutes 1/15 so very economic. There is a whole range depending on coat colour and type.
