Crow & Grey Day

Sunday saw Dad and I looking at the last Maize fields that had been cut. He and the shoot owners son, Olly had shot 117 corvids the week before on the neighbouring field and now we were going to have one last go. Olly met us and we saw the only place to decoy was the furthest corner, as the large field was bordered by two roads, albeit very quiet country ones. Two houses to our extreme left meant no shooting that way so with our backs to the woods we set up twenty crow decoys and some pigeon shell ones and two hides. The ground was thick with mud from the rain we had had and the set up was tough going but soon we were peering through our netting for the first customer. I had my Sam Neyt crow call with me and that was to prove helpful during the day, calling in many a carrion crow from a pig unit in the distance that we had permission on, yet sadly was right next to the village.

Olly was the first to get a few with his Winchester 8 shot and Dad had some high ones using my Beretta auto. I had opted to bring along my Lil 28 bore auto and thankfully matched their 12 bore display with ease. During a quiet spell I went for a wander in the woods (again our permission) to find a pigeon that had been winged. I had shot this wood several times for squirrels over the years and was always a good place for them. I soon had shot seven with the 28 bore, and also found the pigeon :) Leaving the two others to tackle the crows, I grabbed some more cartridges and went off after the squirrels. At once point, I shot 5 without moving and on the way back laden down with them, had a left and right one handed (the joys of a light gun)

Back at the hides I called in some corvids into the pattern that other wise would have been unshootable due to the houses to the left. We then had to stop as two horses trotted up the road, it wasn't worth the risk spooking them even though they were well out of range. A sneaky jay flicked past which caught my eye and my second shot dropped him into the wood. As we considered packing up, I called and shot a nice big carrion which as it dropped, I saw he was a bit unusual. Picking it up, its wings were nearly pure white, the third we have had this year but this was the most pronounced in colour variation. After a gruelling hike back with the gear through the mud, we had 56 corvids, four pigeons and a jay and also I had managed 21 squirrels on my unscheduled mooch around the woods. The shoot owners son Olly was very happy as was his father when he heard of the result we had :)

great day good bag of crows and squirrels

I,m amazed at the amount of squirrels you got just for a walk through the woods it must be heaving with them where you are

Near Exeter, Devon. I shoot and trap between 300-400 every year this is my third biggest solo bag in one session though
