Beretta06
Hello folks, As you know, today I have been shooting double guns on a clear up day, with Old Farrier offering to match £25 for each bird killed by myself and donating it to the Orchid charity. Today, there was plenty of options to bankrupt OF, but he again brought out my charitable side!!! Our day was spread over 4 drives, shooting 6 guns, with the target bag being around 500 head. I know this is a large bag (some will be shocked and disgusted etc) but that isn't the focus point of the post. So, it rained. And rained. And rained. Pretty much all day really, making conditions very unpleasant, so we decided to shoot through and eat at the end of the day. Now, when OF offered the challenge, he didn't know we were on a big double gun day, or that we were only shooting six guns. Theoretically, he could have received a commitment for 120 to 140 birds (costing OF between £3000 and £4000!), which would have been a pretty mean thing to do to such a charitable man. But, equally, I didn't want to lie about what I shot either - so I devised a cunning plan. First thing to remember is this was my day - my money, my guests, so my rules! I shot with the same folk yesterday and had discussed how best to 'play nicely'. The answer was simple - share the sport!! We contacted the shoot last night, explained the plan and offered some of the beaters (4, two young and two more mature!) and two pickers -up (with the prettiest dogs, as selected by Mrs B06!) to take part with us. We increased to 8 guns shooting, with each 'extra' shooting two drives each, using our loaders and guns. It is amazing to see how excited someone gets realising they are shooting on their own shoot, plus double gunning, which I guess many people don't get to experience. So, that reduced any single gun's potential bag, shared some sport, but still didn't really help so much with OF - I would still expect to get into the low 60s for the bird count. So, cunning plan number 2 - iI double gunned with a single gun, plus my loader shooting my second gun. He (Brian) is an excellent loader, but rarely shoots at all on driven days himself, so was fun. He spent most of the quiet perieds patting me on the back or shaking my hand!!! Our other agreement was that he would shoot all the birds he was happy eith, with me taking the higher ones where he felt less comfortable. So, with the changes in place, the rain drowning us, the birds came, and cane, and came. Once nerves settled, there was some excellent shooting along the line, with many 'screamers' being taken against driving rain and gale force blustery winds. Drives seemed to last forever, but the birds kept coming, with us trying to always take cocks whenever possible. Brian shot very well indeed, with myself taking the occasional 'high fella' as they soared overhead. It kept raining and blowing, but even today's weathe rdidn't break the spirit of any of the Guns. So, after four drives, many cartridges and a lot of rain, I finished with a personal bag of 24 pheasants, 9 partridges and 1 crow that was so high it had snow on it when it crashed to the ground! So, my total for OF is 34, which I believe is £850 for charity. It took a lot of restraint not to bankrupt OF today!!! Total bag for the day was 614. 428 cock pheasants, 113 hen pheasants, 68 partridges, 5 woodcock. So, another good day for the charity. I would like to give a huge thanks to OF for raising the challenge and also to the other members of my shoot for playing the game today. And, as always, to the PW massiv, who motivate us to do good things for folk who need it. I will try to post some photos once I get the water out of my camera! It is in a bowl of uncooked rice, drying out at the moment. B06 Edited to add my stratospheric crow to my tally! grrclark
I think that is a wonderful outcome for all concerned, from the charity to the folks who unexpectedly got to shoot today. Such a shame the weather was dreadful for you B06, but I sincerely hope the sport and camaraderie of friends on the shoot made it very enjoyable none the less. shoot and be safe
Well done Beretta06, I enjoyed reading that. Your sportsman's ship towards Old farrier is truly admirable and to share the day with the "ground workers" is again very generous on your part as well as your shooting party. Hats off to you sir. Old farrier, I bet that's a weight off your mind Thank you for your generosity towards the charity. Thank you to every one who has partaken in this thread with your donations. The bottle of malt will be going to Bigbird after I placed the guesses for her which was made by the regulars in the pub I was in at the time. The bottle has kindly been donated by the former landlady of the Crown Inn (where the name of the shoot comes from), who is now running the Mill Tavern in Flint North Wales. Thank you Ceri. shoot and be safe
Who would have thought that my day on the Crown Shoot would have raised so much :o It's a shame that Gnome of the Woods couldn't make the day :( but by pulling out (not his fault) this topic would not exist. I started this topic with the expectation of raising between £150-£200 for charity and that was a tad optimistic In fact it has raised a total of £1860 for Orchid. Truly amazing that in less than 1 week we, The Pigeon Watch Massive, have raised so much. At the start of the sweepstake tonight I said I would donate a bottle of malt whiskey. Ceri, the "Crown Shoot landlady" has, instead, very kindly donated the prize. With that in mind, I have just saved the best part of £30 However with all the charitable offerings made by the PW member's, especially B06 and Old farrier I would like to donate the £30 that I would have spent on the bottle + £10 p&p now making the grand total of this thread raising for Orchid a staggering £1900.00 :yahoo: Edited January 15, 2015 by shoot and be safe

Best make sure the rules don't allow double gunning the targets with your own loader if Beretta 06 joins the the shoot with his new matched pair.
