Few Pics To End The Season.

Had a couple of nice walks before the end but would have been better if we had a wee bit more snow. Was very hard frost which produced a better showing of woodcock and loads of snipe appeared fro no where.

The first day was around a place of 500ish acres that i only shoot once a season for birds and the rest of the year it produces cracking numbers of roe.It marches the MILs place and the fox controlling makes a huge difference to the game birds with plenty pheasants and also rose a small covey of grey partridges which are a rarity round here nowadays.

With a gale blowing it made the birds challenging and ended up with 4 pheasants,2 pigeons,a woodcock and snipe which was spot on and could have had a lot more but as usual here the vast majority were hens. The pigeons were screamers with the wind and was surprised when they both dropped.

Next headed away to a wee pond but as it had been frozen for a while wasnt expecting much action.Had under dressed again and it was absolutely baltic but 2 very late teal drakes made it all worth while. In all 9 came in but in the dark it was very hard to get a shot off.

Usually go for a last day walk with the old fella and Mac and i just work the dugs but with the old fella nay feeling 100% and Mac been off school for over a week with a chest infection i decided to head oot on Friday instead.Asked Mac how he was feeling and that was enough for him to get ready so told him to get well wrapped up and away we went.

Again it was bitterly cold with a gale and the birds were thinnish on the ground but we ended up with 4 pheasants which was a good bag once again. As before the birds were nay that easy with the wind resulting in a few misses. It was a fair old walk for Mac and getting back to the Jeep was a treat so we then went to bait the foxes for the next night. After this we went to another pond which had been solid for weeks but it would be our last gig of the season so we had to try.

Arrived with around 30 mins of light left and got the motor well stuck, but just on dark, after putting a track of straw in front and a lot of pushing we got moving and then stopped on a better bit of ground and walked to the pond.Waited till light was very nearly all gone and was just away to take a pic of Mac holding our blank bag, when 5 mallard came screaming over with the first clue being a couple of quacks. With the electronics on it gave us that second to get ready and they were on us in no time and it was a real up and pull affair but luckily a single duck came doon to the 4 shots.Outstanding to have one on the last shoot especially after conceding a blank.

Been a very good season once again, although a bit of snow would have improved the game and the ponds have been out of action quite a lot with the frost but thats the way it goes.

We had planned the saturday night for the foxes, and with the weather atrocious and far from ideal we got set up at the MILs.Always go when the moon is big but we didnt see it the entire night with hellwater and gale winds being the weather.

The only fox we saw dropped to the .243 at 18.45 after what seemed an age trying to get on to him.Had to mount the lamp on the scope but the dog wasnt keen on sitting still but he finally took a bit of bait and started eating it at just over 100m and that gave us the chance.I know there were 3 cutting about but even though we stagged on till 04.30 no others appeared.Still fine to get another one doon though and hopefully get the others at the next moon.

Had taken the new Pulsar DFA75 set up on the .17Hmr but with that wind didnt get a chance to try it oot but looks a good bit of kit.
