winnie&bezza
Hi all, I've got a a ray mears bushcraft knife with Micarta handle (not the megabucks one) which I've had for 11 years and over the years I lost the flat grind and could never get it back. I invested in tormek grind system and used the knife jig to put a new grind on it,but obviously being a round wheel it put a hollow grind on it. So question is there anyone on here that could put a flat v grind on it if I sent it to them? Cheers
bigman
You'd lose a fair bit of steel from the edge trying to re grind the hollow out ,
winnie&bezza
Yeah I know and I've lost a bit as it is but willing to risk it as it is just sitting there doing nothing. But if it's not worth doing it them fair enough! Cheers
TIGHTCHOKE
Matt Fieldcrafter might be the one to do it, he's a very capable chap.
winnie&bezza
Cool but is it likely he'll read this though?
ditchman
whats wrong with "hollow ground".........all my cutters...2 hunting and one GP...are hollow ground.........
CaptainBeaky
Another one who would definitely be able to do it is a chap on the British Blades forum who goes by the user name of Longstrider. I think I have his email address somewhere...
winnie&bezza
There's nothing wrong with it Ditchman but it had flat v grind when I bought it and I could get it ridiculously sharp and it is a strong edge especially at 45 degree angle. Okay captain if no joy here I'll ask you for it if you have it. Cheers
Old farrier
Hi Have you considered a emery disk in a angle grinder similar to the ones used on car body repairs ? Remember heat is NOT your freind when grinding knife blades Just a DIY solution All the best Of
bigman
I'll second longstrider (Ian) if it can be done he's the man for it
winnie&bezza
No I haven't thought of doing that but I don't think I could get an even grind on it and probably cock it right up! The tormek grind system I used is water cooled and slow oscillation wheel but I suppose to put a flat grind on it,they would use a belt. Thanks for idea mate. photon
This will probably not help but the original scandi blades had a slight convex edge, it was just over time sharpening in the field with a flat stone using the top edge as a guide it became flat, once it met in the middle they had a convex grind put back on. winnie&bezza
That's interesting to know but if you grind it with a belt surely it will be flat? Or were the original Scandi grinds ground with something different?
photon
That's interesting to know but if you grind it with a belt surely it will be flat? Or were the original Scandi grinds ground with something different? As usual i have confused the issue i should have said the scandinavian knives not the RM Bushcraft knives although i have seen a couple that have had a convex grind put on, theory being easier for food prep with a secondary bevel only having to sharpen a small area. Hope that makes sense. Edit : Can you put a pic on and have you tried the edge. Edited February 3, 2015 by photon
malkiserow
Just use the grinding face on your tormek by hand and take much care. You can get it flat, no problem. .... rub your knife hollow with black marker pen to see where you are with the flat dressing and to keep it even on both sides. Unless you have worn away your Tormek wheel so it is now a very small diameter, it will not be too bad especially as you won't make the mistake again. Paddy Galore!
but then if you're really not happy with your tormek wheel i'm sure it'd be easy to find it a new home

winnie&bezza
Yeah that makes sense mate and I've learned something new! Id like to put a pic up but it just says file too large. So malkie do you use the side of the wheel or face as surely if I use the front face it will be hollow ground again? Sorry if I sound clueless! Ha I've only used it a few times and had it about 4 years which is scandalous as I'm a carpenter and I bought it for chisels, plane irons etc but it's easier to use my £14 b&q wheel grinder as it's faster and less hassle to set up! Cheers I would but is his name Matt fieldcrafter on here?
