Oh no!

I think and hope this is that little vixen I missed with the 357 at 160yards or so in December! Remember? I took hair off it!

This time though is was the grand old distance of 20yds!

Now for the twist!

A couple of weeks ago I got a flaming for shooting a fox with a 22lr. The thing is, that fox shot through the ribs at 40yds in and out ran about thirty yards and piled up.

This dotty vixen was shot with a win mag at 20yds through the ribs but ran 50yds before piling up! So which is better?

This is a classic case for why I pay no credence to ft/lbs!

Anyway it was a good morning, two are still in the area according to the shepherd and finding this little vixen took some diligent hunting and as per usual good fortune. The slightest twig as I crested a rise and she would of busted me!

The 40gr Remmie soft point raked her left shoulder and exited the far rear rib.

I will spare you the expletives she used on me!

Now where is that dog!

Well done UD.

I agree, it makes a nonsense of classifying species to calibre. I cannot understand why I can legally shoot Roe in Scotland with my 223, but not in England and Wales. The 223 certainly has the stopping power. We actually give them to NATO soldiers to stop the enemy, which are certainly larger than a Roe!!

It's accuracy that kills.

In Scotland so I believe Hornet was the favourite roe cartridge! Then the experts came along!!

Well done Underdog - I always enjoy and look forward to your postings.

At my recent firearms renewal visit I was informed that North Wales have now stopped the use of the 17hmr on fox!

At the risk of a grilling I would not be too excited about shooting anything bigger than a rabbit with a 17grn bullet.

In my book it has to be able to make two new holes through the ribs. In and out. Understanding what the gun in hand is capable of determines how it should be used.

22lr frontal shots I am more confident than I ever would be with a hmr! Same with the wmr with the super light bullets. This is as I have found that the harder you push something the same forces try to stop it causing a risk of shallow wounds. Lr just expands a little and plods through.

My choice for wmr is forty grainers.

The 25 grainers I have are poor in my opinion. They won't go 3" in soft earth and no expansion!

If the hmr could shoot a 30grn bullet at 2100 it may of been a different animal!

Just my musings.

Well done underdog.i saw a fella from the U.S. on youtube shoot a hog at 20yards with a .22lr tracer round.dropped it stone dead so proving that accuracy can take up the slack when using a round that some think is too small for the job!ATB

Yes, shoot a deer through the gut and ft/lbs become meaning less!

Underdog,

looking at her teats they look a little pert, have they been at it round your way ?

Was out the other night and they were calling all around were i was shooting, didn't see anything round my bits mind, just kept hearing the calls

Never noticed the teats but her special place was swollen. There is a dog with her yes and that has attacked a local terrier and big lambs. Something tells me they are later this year compared to last! A few weeks ago these were very vocal, locals say they still are.

Am going down there tonight, 9ish.
