storm in a teacup
Sorry everyone but its another what gun thread. After being taken out wildfowling by my mate for the first time I am now well and truly hooked. I am currently looking for a suitable gun for the new season, having looked throught the previous what gun threads many of the recomended guns are way above my budget. I am looking for something hard wearing with a 3 1/2 inch chamber and that I can shoot high performance steel through. The only problem is my budget, I have £400 max but that also includes a few cartridges. So probably nearer the £350-£370 mark ( 3 young kids and a rubbish job cap my budget). I would really like to spend as little as possible so I think secondhand is the way to go. I have been looking at pumps as they are cheaper than semi's and black rather than camo as seem to be a bit cheaper as well. I have been looking at the winchester sxp, does anyone have any experience of them? If not what would you recomend I keep my eye out for over the next few months. thanks for your time storm Edited February 28, 2015 by storm in a teacup
Varminator
Keep your eyes out for the Winchester as never heard anyone moan about them. The Hatsans are a massive gamble. Some people swear by them but I know of so many that have had all sorts of issues so I wouldn't risk one. Hope that helps.
fenboy
As you are aware you are going to be very limited for your budget , firstly is it foreshore shooting you will be doing ? much chance of geese? if not then chances are you could get a better 3" gun for your Budget . If you need a 3.5" the SXP may be about as well as you can do , or if you can stretch you budget just a tad you could get a new Revo K200 which is a cammo 3.5" over and under Also as above you could also get a Hatsan but although a few love them I would not personally touch but its down to you of course if you want to take that gamble. storm in a teacup
I looked at the hatsans but they seem to have a very mixed review. If it didn't work out for me then I would be stuck as I wouldn't be able to get another gun. It's only goose I'm interested in to be honest and I will only be shooting on the foreshore. Unfortunately my budget is set at £400 for a gun and cartridges.
fenboy
Where are you located , gun trader has a 3.5" Zabala O/U for under £400 quid but its in Lancs The only issue you may have with the SXP is they are very short in the stock . storm in a teacup
Cheers I will have a look. Short stock not to much of a problem though as I'm only 5 foot and a fag end.

muncher
On face book( shotguns for sale} there is a baikal semi auto 3 1/2 for £400 good guns and very strong and this one has only had 150 shells through it.
storm in a teacup
Thanks for your replies you give me a few more options to look at. I hadn't even considered an O/U. I'm in no hurry to buy at the moment as the seasons only just finished and I am the type of person who likes to bore my wife with endless internet comparisons before she pipes up with " will you just ******* buy one and shut up"
fenboy
The baikal would be a great gun for what you need , they are pretty much bomb proof , difficult to find S/H as a rule.
strangford wildfowler
Fenboy is right baikel are bomb proof, my dad has one and it handles 3 1/2" shells with ease his is semi auto and its reliable too cant go wrong with them I think

ratty1
I had a sxp, had nothing but trouble with it, if you want a pump then mossberg 835 is a good bet, hard to get hold of though,
john12
What about a old 10 gauge sxs? You can often pick them up for under your budget in summer.
Big Mat
What about a old 10 gauge sxs? You can often pick them up for under your budget in summer. You've got to get cartridges for it then. I wouldnt exactly call them the best all round wildfowling gun ( I shoot one )
washwildfowler
If it's for fowling then you've got plenty of time .. I would suggest perhaps save a little more so you only have to buy once . there a some good second hand guns out there at the moment .. Good luck in your choice . Just to add stay away from the hatson escorts ...

ratty1
Mine would let you fire the first shot then wouldnt lock at the breach for second, got it fixed several times but it reverted back to the problem each time, very frustrating, got a sxs yilditz now, no problems with that. Vkom
First time wildfowler an on a budget so went for the new hatsan escort in black the 3yr warrinty swung it over buying second hand been out 5 times with it an no probs so far
RossEM
That estimate is more than they sell for and I guess there's a buyer's premium? Is that right? There's 21% on it - vendor insisted we put £350 on it, I would've put the estimate lower but sometimes we just can't
IEH
£343 brand new at Sportsman. Your vendor's not being realistic.
Reabrook
It's also only 3" chambered. The 3 1/2" Wildfowler is a little dearer at £370 but still cheaper new than the estimate. I bought one last summer as a cheap back up to my auto and have to say for the price I can't yet fault it
