poontang
As most of you probably know I've recently been quite lucky at getting fairly close to a pair of local Barn Owls, and managed a few shots over the last couple of months. Unfortunately the birds seem to have been about less and less over the last couple of weeks, due I suspect to a fair bit of disturbance from some over zealous locals. Not to be put off I went out and had a look at an area where I thought there was a possibility of a few sightings. I spoke to the landowner and explained what I wanted to do, and he allowed access to his land, apart from one field where he keeps a bull...suits me!! After my first visit I noticed a male bird out hunting, returning to a nesting box, then straight off out again. Bingo, a breeding pair, with the male working overtime to feed his sitting mate. On the second visit there wasn't a huge amount of action, but the bird hunted in the distance, and I knew it was only a matter of time before he came close enough for a shot. Yesterday I set off about 4pm in the hope of catching him on his evening hunt...he was sat up roosting in a tree adjacent to the nearby nesting box, and that's where he stayed for nearly 3 hours. The cloud was starting to form and the light was starting to go as I decided he was probably fed well enough, and I started to think about leaving him to his rest. Typically, just as I started to pack up he was out of the tree, and quartering across the field towards me. He flew silently no more than 10 ft from me...far too close to get a shot. I watched as he hunted some 500 yards away, and decided to slip down into a ditch to catch him on his return. And return he did... He was in and out about seven or eight times, and I managed a few shots before the sun slipped behind the clouds. A fantastic location, and one which should, hopefully, yield some great opportunities. One last one... Hope you enjoy the pics.

JDog
Great pictures. The lack of light added rather than took away from the photos. Did you notice that the Owl was ringed?
