Misfire/hangfire... Keep the gun pointing safe for about 20/30 seconds then open the gun and inspect the primer to see that it has been struck, if that's the case discard by cutting in two, empty the powder onto the flower bed or lawn and spray the primer with some oil / wd40 then bin it

No, my wife's had a few in the last batch of 20 bore carts we bought, I just stick em in me pocket until I get home, cut them on the garden wall and oil the primer.....don't know what the fuss is about

Give it another go. It may be a weak strike. If it fails again and you have a lake or river close by chuck it in there.

Please God! No !

Do not throw in a lake. Cut it open. I collect bits of powder periodically. Homeloads and shell disections and whatnot. I burn it in a metal bucket in small quantities. No more than 10 grams at a time.

Take it to the local police station and hand it in, they will dispose of it safely, they may ask a few questions, and there could be some paper work to fill in.

I have in the past put them in my coat pocket took them home and got the bomb disposal team to pop round to my house to make them safe. But that's rather time consuming.

I've had a few with rimfire ammo. I usually keep the barrel pointed downrange for 30 seconds or so, then eject the mis-fire cartridge, re-load it and turn it to a fresh striking surface and re-fire. 100% of the time, they have always gone "bang" when re-shot. I would caution anyone against sawing cartridges in half or otherwise messing around with any primed ammo. An accident waiting to happen, that.

Has anyone EVER seen a misfired shotgun cartridge 'explode' ? I have seen a few shotguns explode, but that was always due to obstructed barrels, or on 2 occasions, corroded barrels. I can recall the words " Not likely to explode in bulk" being printed on the cartridge boxes.

Don't waste time cutting the shot, just cut above the metal where the powder is, empty the powder and then oil (or water if you prefer), the powder is not explosive and will dissolve away and feed the grass or plants if you spread it in the garden

They need a chamber to bang. They will pop but that's just the primer and some powder.
