I once heard from a beater on a shoot that the Duke had shot 590+ birds for a little over 1800 shots, over 5 drives. Almost a 3:1 ratio for a man in his late eighties at high pheasant. Not only that but I don't think I have ever shot over 200 cartirdges in a day, I'd certainly feel it if I did

First things first, taking 3:1 as the ratio 590 kills equates to 118 birds per stand, 354 birds not just seen but fired at  - accepting near continuous rate of fire with a double loader that would take some 59 minutes of shooting with 10 seconds per bird. So we have a minimum of 5 hours continuous shooting not even taking into account anything else. Even a fit 25 year old would struggle with the sheer pace needed.

Now as for the actual matter being discussed, double standards seems about right. ;) Accept it, Prince Phillip says crude, often racist things and it tickles the hell out of some you, change the name/personality/nationality and in a reverse situation the PW Massive would be mercilessly lambasting the comment(s).

My dad served with and was seconded to the duke whilst seving in the foal navy at Malta in 1946 . He always said he was the most pompous, sanctimonious, obnoxious *** he had ever served with.

Sounds a bit equine to me

I love him. A proper old school gentleman who speaks his mind . Long may he live .

I don't accept that at all.

The man has been in the public eye for nigh on 70 years. Pretty much every speech and comment he makes has been scrutinised by the tabloid press and others over that period of time. I think you'd be hard pressed to find more than a handful of irreverent comments, and certainly nothing overtly racist.

The comments he has made should be taken in the context and time they were made.

Call it as you find; fair enough. I have to say I did not witness this in him. Salty, acute observational sense of wit, not one for fools, yes all of that. But not pompous at all and no nastiness. Maybe the intervening 40 years mellowed him, who knows.

Nothing overtly racist well that's ok then, compared to what................. the chap that walked into a church and shot black people he must be racist or was his motives taken out of context, Phillip's the very essence of racism he provides a platform for whats "acceptable", it gives oxygen for the "want a be racists" the space to propagate intolerance

Well it was you who threw in the racist card originally, so maybe you could clarify your description of a racist, and then perhaps cite a few of the 'racist' comments HRH has made.

Not a Tony Blair fan your spot on about him having blood on his hands,

I am sure your well aware but just to play the game here are a few, just to put them in context were any of us to say this in work we would be fired.

Whats is a racist, in my book its someone who supports or condones the propitiation that one race is superior to another, Philips remarks are the spring board that enable him to look at other races in a deming way he can then put forward a view he is superior, that's how people justify slavery, that's how people justify jenocide, it starts with we must be superior to them.

During a visit to an electronics factory in Scotland, Prince Philip saw a messy fuse box and said it looked "as though it was put in by an Indian". Within hours, Buckingham Palace said: "The Duke of Edinburgh regrets any offence which may have been caused by remarks he is reported as making earlier today. With hindsight, he accepts what were intended as light-hearted comments were inappropriate."

On a visit to China in 1986 he told British students: "If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed."

To black politician Lord Taylor of Warwick, 1999: “And what exotic part of the world do you come from?”

To the President of Nigeria, who was in national dress, in 2003: “You look like you’re ready for bed!”

To a tourist in Budapest in 1993: “You can’t have been here long, you haven’t got a pot belly.”

To a British trekker in Papua New Guinea, 1998: “You managed not to get eaten then?”

In Kenya in 1984: “You ARE a woman, aren’t you?”

To Aboriginal leader William Brin, Queensland, 2002: “Do you still throw spears at each other?”

Don't have a problem with the royal family , but I agree if I had done something like that I would be in court and in trouble ,

Watching the news the royals were on the old balcony to watch the fly past , what was the pxxxx who couldn't hack being in the forces doing in a uniform

What would you be charged with, do you think, to end up in court?. What a silly thing to say

I found that list of Prince Philip quotes quite humorous, thanks for sharing!

He`s the Patron of BASC.

I`ve met him on a couple of occassions. He is a great friend of shooting and has a wicked sense of humour.

I`m not a royalist but I think he typifies the irreverend sense of humour of his generation.

Many years ago when I lived in Windsor I would often see him thrashing his big black Alvis along the Long Walk in Windsor Great Park. In those far off days when "security" was almost unheard of he often blasted past me on my push bike. I used to give him a nonchalant wave, like you do to the husband of the Queen when you`re fifteen, and he always waved back.

Maybe you should google Indian wiring to see what he meant by his comment. I'm sure it'll become clear. Maybe in this day and age not the best choice of words but hardly a precursor to slavery and genocide.

As for the other remarks I would imagine most of them raising a laugh in programmes of the time such as Only Fools And Horses, Rising Damp, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, 'Allo 'Allo and so on. As I said earlier the context and timing have to be taken into consideration. What may have passed as humour in the past (and a fair few of your examples are 20/30 years old) would probably be frowned upon now.

You can find offence in anything if you look hard enough...which you seem to be doing.

I daresay that a great many would share that opinion of him, but I still like him and his political incorrectness.

So many look at prominent people in society and wish them to be anodyne and conscious of everyone's sensitivities and never say anything out of place. I would far rather have some colour and a bit of controversy; although he has made a few gaffs he has never really done anything overtly offensive and despite what the republicans would have us all believe the royals are fabulous value for money in terms of what they bring to the British identity and how that is marketed globally.

I hope that he keeps going for a good bit longer and keeps irking those of sensitive dispositions. More power to your elbow Phil.

Look at the dates there. "casual racism" was a lot more acceptable 20 odd years ago. I was a child at that time and we always used to go to the "**** shop".

yes i do

I assume your fine with Phillips views on race

Maybe i should send you a ladder so you can get on down from that high horse you are on.

Phil the Greek is 94 he comes form a totally different era,and given that fact i think he says very little that is wrong.

What is wrong is hand wringers like yourself who take the greatest objection to a few comments and then try to blow them out of all proportion claiming to be morally outraged.

He has spent 50 years being the bloke in the background supporting one of the greatest Monarchs this world has ever seen, and assisting her all he can.

You may not like the Queen and Phil, but there are a huge amount of us that do.

Love and kisses ,

Rob the Royalist
