fenboy
Anyone tried Autarky foods ? I have still not found a complete food that suits my new pup despite trying quite a few, so with it being wheat and gluten free I was going to give it a try. Stonepark
Used to use it before swapping to csj cp21 salmon for mine.
fenboy
Did you change because you were unhappy with it ?
Stonepark
Was ok, but as my previous dog was getting older he needed more (csj has glucosamine and chondroitin which growing dogs also need),current young dog has has cp21 since pup and is springer equivalent of usain bolt (lean solid muscle). Nb poo was a bit runnier with autarky but not excessively so He is fed adhoc (i.e. bowl kept full and eats what he wants) and no stomach or poo problems. Gets odd bone or chew but that's about it. I think if I tried to keep two labs bowls full I would soon be skint and own two fat dogs !

That made me giggle, I know what you mean - my lab pup would literally eat herself to death if I allowed it
cocker boy
Eukanuba puppy. Never had a single problem with it over many years and many pups. We have tried most brands, given free to try, and nothing is as good. We now refuse free puppy food samples altogether.
oowee
Raw meat and chicken feat for chewing. No smelly poo cheap and delivered to the door.
Stonepark
That made me giggle, I know what you mean - my lab pup would literally eat herself to death if I allowed it It is a learned behaviour, too many pups and only 1 bowl of food. I have my pups separated for feeding at 6 weeks so they don't develop the bolt and gorge style of eating (competitive) and thereafter they look after themselves. Buy it from Costco, used it for years:no issues with my GSD.Like the lack of "additives".

fenboy
like the sound of this, (i think) what could be better than raw meat ? we are constantly told not to eat processed food ourselves why feed it to dogs ? Sounds great but just like feeding ourselves we sometimes have to take the more convenient option . Also the term "raw meat" is a little misguiding , a dog cannot meet all its nutritional requirements from meat alone , it need some meat , some bone , some offal some veg etc etc if only raw feeding was a case of chucking them a lump of meat then I would be doing it , as it is I tried it and soon got fed up with it . Dry feeding does give them all they need in one package , raw feeding does not. my 10 month pup has been on Autarky for 2 months / suits him i changed from csj as his main diet , he does get supplemented with tripe etc now and then . very happy with what goes in and what comes out . Good to know thanks , its the what comes out bit I want to get sorted !

landy george
Both of mine have been on it for the last 5 & 8 years never had a problem.
eieieio
I tried raw for a bit. I saw no difference in condition although there is a lot less waste to clear up. I like Millies Wolfheart although it would be quite expensive if you have a lot of dogs.
malmick
Dry feeding does give them all they need in one package , raw feeding does not. Depends on what you feed them, bit of a broad generalisation that. Each to their own but I'd like to know what's lacking in a raw diet and what your evidence is. Each to their own but I'd like to know what's lacking in a raw diet and what your evidence is. Not enough offal and skin, bones etc (i.e. whole food). In wild predators go for stomach, guts and liver first, fat 2nd, and then everything else. Guess where all the nutrition and energy is......... fenboy
Depends on what you feed them, bit of a broad generalisation that. Each to their own but I'd like to know what's lacking in a raw diet and what your evidence is. I think if you read my post again I said "meat alone" diet would be lacking in all the nutrients needed and went on to list some of the other things needed. Evidence wise there is plenty on what is needed for a balanced raw diet , other than that I work for one of the worlds largest petfood manufacturers and have been trained in pet nutrition . So to make things clear can a dog get all the nutrients it needs from meat alone no , can it get them from a balanced raw diet yes it can , but a balanced raw diet is a lot of faffing about when they can get the same from a complete dry food and as someone has already mentioned it may improve what is coming out of the dog but it does not improve their condition and it also leaves them open to other risks. So it basically boils down to whether the owner wants the convenience and reduced risk of complete dry food compared with the inconvenience of providing a balanced raw diet and accepting/managing the risks. Yes. If I thought a dog would be in better condition with raw feeding I would do it but the fact is they are in no better condition than one thats on the right complete food , its finding the correct complete food for the dog that can be a ball ache as each dog is different . As I said I have tried raw feeding in the past and saw no benefit that made the messing about worth the effort.
Paul T
I feed Autarky and I've found it to be better than most. I'm shovelling up less and it's firm, but I do feed raw meat too. Overall the dogs are very fit, so I've no reason to look for an alternative.
oowee
This is who i use for the raw food. I mostly get offal bone and meat in a mix. You can get bark to add if you want stomach type contents (found in the wild). Its faff free if you can remember to get it out of the freezer. The poo is dry and turns to chalk in a few days so if you miss some on poo patrol its not a problem.
big bad lindz
After my pups were weaned we put them onto royal canin for a couple of months and then at 8 months or so changed over to Autarky and have no problems. All 3 of out Golden Retrievers are on it so we go through a fair amount, fed twice a day. If, as we occasionally do get a upset, the dog will be fed on a light diet of cooked chicken & rice or a little scrambled egg for a couple of days to allow things to settle
