Another Wet Weekend

I had a call on Wednesday, 200 on the rape , I was busy on Thursday so Friday morning 08.00 we are off the view the field and find this flock of devouring pigeon. As we approached the farm we noticed

a couple of birds flighting to the top field which was good news as the report I'd received said that they were at the top of the field. We scanned the field and it had approx two hundred birds down feeding hard. We watched it and decided on an ambush point within walking distance of the track that ran through the farm . We drove down the track and the whole flock up and went so we set up twelve natural birds ten on cradles above the rape and two on the magnet. It was now 09.30 and we waited for them to return which they did in one flock . We did not shoot as it would put them all into panic mode , but let them pass over then shoot the tail end charlie's . This had the effect of spooking the whole flock and fragmented them into smaller groups but hopfully they would not associate the bang with danger and return. The next three hours was frustrating as we would have birds return and set for the decoys only to flair off at the pattern. we ended up with the magnet and eight angels from all directions coming to the pattern which made the birds within range. It was all over at 15.00 and we started to pack away the gear and picked up seventyfive pigeons after five and a half hours shooting. On the way home we stopped off and delivered some Christmas Cheer to some of our farmers.

Now 08.00 Saturday morning was dire, cold, wet and dark. So we set out and decided to continue the bottle run while the rain was persisting. Five bottles later we had not seen a bird. Now any self respecting pigeon would be looking for a nice thick wood with rape on the leeward side and dine in the relative wind free warm atmosphere. So we looked and found the perfect spot , the birds were dropping out of the wood and gliding into the rape. So a quick phone call and NO the shoots on today!!!!!!.

So we kept on looking it was now midday and the rain was starting to slow up and we found a few birds in a corner of a rape field , so another call YES you can shoot but keep away from the pool because of the ducks. Now all the birds were in the corner of the field round the duck pond as it was out of the wind . So we had to set up with the wind off our back and hope that the birds would come into wind and into range. We shot our first bird at 13,30 and stopped shooting at 15.30 so in two hours shooting we picked up fifty one pigeons. Had we been allowed to shoot near the pond we would have doubled that. But Bite your lip and tow the line as it is a very good farm to us. We continued our bottle run on the way home and ended up another satisfying weekend .

Your perseverance pays, as usual. :good:

The regional differences are always very interesting, the pigeons are showing no interest in the rape in my area.

Although they were on the rape when I was checking them at home I found green ivy berries and even sloes in them . I believe that the mild conditions have made the acorns rot but we have found dead pigeons on the lanes and in the fields so it may be the tannin that is killing them.

As usual another great result, not seen the Christmas jumper yet! Keep up the good reports just love em. :good::good:

The Christmas Jumper is usually the last shooting day before Christmas , that was a challenge raised by JDog so I think he must enter the competition this year along with others, so I await your pictures. Thanks for the comments with respect to the reports, during a conversation with Bunny Blaster today I said that an feel I'm the only one posting and he said your the only one shooting pigeons but I'm sure that others must be getting bags of pigeons so let's see your picture. The clues in the title " Pigeon Watch".
