Foxing in the mud

The weather of late has been pretty damp in Mid Wales with not many dry nights to get out.

Saturday I cleaned my NV enabled rifle as I have put a few shots through it so decided to leave it in the cabinet and take the X Bolt and the lamp out. ...This proved to be a mistake on farm 1 .I spotted a fox about 200 yards away, gave it a good squeak on the back of my hand and lay down in a nice patch of mud to take the shot....where had it gone...oh there it is about 6 yards away. Dear god it must have charged in to the call much to its surprise and mine as well. It departed at break neck speed across the field and would not stop.....oh well.

Onto farm 2 ..not much point in attempting stealth as every step was a squelch. I decided to get the foxpro out and see how randy the local male fox population was . I have a cracking vixen call recording so gave this a go. Flash of eyes after about 10 seconds, lay down (again in a nice wet patch), scope mounted NM 800 on, 80 grain bullet on its way, dog fox number 1 down at about the 100 yard mark.

I went and picked him up (top fox in the pic) and headed over to the other side of the farm. Set up on top of a bank and set the caller going again. After about 10 minutes a nice bright set of eyes on the next field, another blast of the call had the fox in the same field as me. Another lovely wet spot for me to settle in for the shot. Lamp on and saw the fox sat about 100 yards away trying to figure out what was going on. Fox no 2 fell to a bib shot at the 100 yards mark.

Since it was getting late and I was covered in mud and soggy I decided it was time for home.

Thanks for reading

Good foxing there Mike, I know that muddy feeling, the last one for me last night was a tricky shot that had me rolling about in the squelchy stuff.

lying on the floor ,**** that.

any reason why you .guys are not using quad sticks .

Cheers bud. I must confess that I made sure the last 2 were in the same field as me before contemplating lying in a wet field.

Thanks Steve. Should have taken the N750a and it would have been game over for all three....you live and learn.

Between the rifle, lamp and my bag with the caller in sticks are to much of a pain in the bum for me to lug around. I also find that whilst shooting prone is not always ideal it gives you the most stable position to shoot from,

Well done Mike that one looks a good lump good shooting

Cheers bud...not as chunky as those Boar you have been shooting

Out of the 60 foxes I have shot this year only one wasnt in good condition (a vixen with an inner thigh wound)...all the rest have been in great condition. Not surprising with good Welsh air and tasty Welsh Lamb to keep them fat

I will happily shoot of sticks if I'm comfortable on the shot and usually do, however, if I can get closer to my quarry I will, if I can get a more stable platform to shoot off I will, if I can't hold the reticule within the targets vitals area I won't shoot. If I have to lye on the floor too shoot a jumpy fox getting on for 200 yards in a strong cross wind at night time, I will. So I guess I don't mind getting wet and mucky, which is probably a good thing due to the recent weather, and i find prone to be my most stable shooting platform.

Glad its not just me who likes a nice flat, muddy and wet platform to shoot off.

I should have also added that I am still of the age where I am capable of getting up off the floor

Terry, you have far to much sense mate. In addition to the fine Welsh weather a nice mud bath is great for the complexion

Glad you managed to get one mate. Any luck on the crows of late?

Good result Mike , the wet and muddy conditions at the minute are a right pain. I remember one particular night years ago when I was out solo lamping in the same wet conditions , I lay down to shoot 2 foxes , unknown to me in cowpats , when I got home had to be hosed down outside.

Yeah done that too, knelt down to take a shot and put my knee straight into a pat

Cheers mate. Unfortunately I have unknowingly rolled in all sorts of stuff..but never needed a pressure washer to clean myself off

Nice work on the two dogs Mike and a free mud pack included , Ha

Cheers bud...unfortunately it doesnt seem to have made me any better looking...oh well
