fatchap
I got one of these for xmas and have just about given up on it. I have spent ages trying to get a edge on some of the knives I have made. Is there a secret knack to this kit? or have I fallen for hype here? Watched the you tube tutorials followed them to the letter and I just cannot get the thing to put even a slightest edge on a dull blade. Anyone on here offer some pointers? TIGHTCHOKE
Are you setting the correct angle?
FalconFN
If there is very little or no edge angle or the edge is rounded it would need quite a bit of time to put it back. Keep going with the coarsest syone and see if it makes a difference.
kennett
I have used on before, and trust me you can get an opinel like a scalpel. You say on knives you have made, don't take this the wrong way but are you sure they aren't over hardened? Trying to sharpen an (accidently) heat hardened chainsaw chain is really hard work
jonny thomas
I've got a cheap copy and as above you can get stuff stupid sharp Run a marker pen down the edge and see what you're taking off may be the wrong angle or rounded
1066
I'm also very pleased with my Chinese cheapo copy - I think it cost about £15 and had no problems. There's plenty of good videos showing correct use.
fatchap
thanks for the advice chaps. with a bit of jigery pokery and info here I have now got it to work. And work it does. it says that setting 25 is best for hunting/bushcraft/fishing knives, After trying all the settings on a volunteer knife I found setting 30 to give the best results
TIGHTCHOKE
Glad you have it sorted, once mastered it really will give you a lovely working edge.
inderraj
Ive used mine for a while now and its given me great results, also have some stones for sharpening but they can be tricky with smaller blades. Glad you got it sorted
Wiltsmark
Is there a need to use a leather stop at the end of the process ?
steve_b_wales
Is there a need to use a leather stop at the end of the process ? I've never used one when sharpening my knives.
tonker
I got one last week, and sharpened all my knives, then sharpened three for the Mrs. First thing she did was cut herself washing it before she used it. I told her they were sharp

Redgum
thanks for the advice chaps. with a bit of jigery pokery and info here I have now got it to work. And work it does. it says that setting 25 is best for hunting/bushcraft/fishing knives, After trying all the settings on a volunteer knife I found setting 30 to give the best results I think the problem would have been the knives had the wrong angle on the cutting edge, thus you have better results with a steeper angle, if you kept at it at 25 degrees you will get there and with the most useful type edge for a hunting knife.
