What to do in Bangkok

Going to Thailand next week for my big 50 for two weeks with the wife and two other couples.

Spending 3 nights in Bangkok then 11 on a beach in Krabi.

Would like to plan the 3 days and nights in Bangkok so want to ask those who've been what you recommend. Whether its a nice restaurant, bar, site or experience, I'd be interested to know. Other than first night at a restaurant we haven't decided anything yet.

First off. Trust no one. People will try and take advantage of the fact you're a tourist, especially if you're there holding a tourist map/pamphlet. You'll have a well dressed businessman approach you and offer his help and even call down a TukTuk for you.

You'll be driven off to a suit shop or diamond shop and after much talking and saying how you just want to get where you want to go, you'll get there. With the extra fees incurred by getting to the previous shops.

Get around by TukTuk, but all places you say to go must also be said with 'No Stops', or the driver will take it upon himself to take you clothes shopping

It's a huge city. Avoid Kosan Road like the plague, unless you like places like Benidorm and Marbella, twinned with Bangkok.

Visit the markets and eat street food. I use an app called Triposo, which you can download and use offline maps and it'll tell you what's near you, in case you need a bite to eat or fancy seeing what's hidden near you.

Take a boat tour up the river and hop off further upstream. Walk until you can't any more and then get a TukTuk back to the hotel.

I'll dig through what I did when I was there. I wasn't short of things to do though, so I wouldn't panic.

Excellent advice from Billy there. I stayed in the Mandarin Oriental right by the river and it was magical. Didn't eat in the hotel though, headed to the streets and ate street food and drank street beer and wasn't ill once.

Take heed about the approaches from well-meaning people. They're all in in together to get you parting with your money. A smile, and a polite but very firm no will most often suffice.

Obviously the big attraction is the Grand Palace - but check which days it is open - we chose a day it wasn't. A river trip is also good, but make sure you have plenty of water with you. You will get the markets with the usual knock off T shirts etc.

As Billy says, be careful on where the Tuk-Tuk drivers take you. One we had did exactly what he said which started off being very annoying - however the driver then explained that there was an incentive by the Tourist Board or someone that if he took the tourists to a certain number of shops he would get a bonus. And yes you will get people come up and tell you something is/isn't open aand you should go somewhere else with them. if you go near the Patpong area you will get people come up to you a "menu" of what you can get.

Thanks Billy, all that noted in my phone, and downloaded the app already!!

I've worked in Bangkok for short periods of time. Most of what is said above is true.

It's a fairly safe place BUT people are always looking to rip you off. If you agree 100 then there will be a thousand excuses as to why you should pay 200 when you come to pay.

dont agree taxi fares in advance. Go by the meter. The concierge at the hotel will give good advice

Don't let taxi/ tuk tuk drivers take you to a particular shop.

Go with an open mind. Walking past the girly bars and reading the 'menus' is fun. Whether you partake or not is up to you.

Fake goods capital of the world. Assume everything is fake.

But enjoy

When I stayed in Bk for a few days about 14 yrs ago we did a day at the River Kwai and had a trip on the river aswell as the train and visit to the War cemetery. Long day but worth it.

Yes that's a good one. Lots of war commonwealth war graves around that area. I found it very moving.
