All joking aside though, isn't there a delicious irony in Australia's policy given the ethnic origins of many of the ancestors of the politicians who made this decision, and the circumstances under which they would have come to Australia - as people fleeing injustice / religious intolerance / persecution and /or seeking a better future for themselves and their families in the "New World"?

 

I wonder how they would have felt if the indigenous peoples (the aborigines) had stopped them landing, rounded them up, and coralled them on an island.....

If the aborigines had known what was going to happen next they probably would have. Its the Australian's knowledge of how they behaved towards their hosts that makes them wary of the same thing happening to them

Many of the original "Settlers" were transported there after going through the Courts having been caught stealing or comitting other misdemeanors.

Yep, my grandfather spent some time there, he thought it better to go of his own free will after having a bit of an "argument" with a copper (bit of a lad was grandfather). At least that way he could come back when he wanted

The Aussies have it right, to get to them these migrants have gone through many other safe countries where they could have sought asylum.

We should reject all asylum seekers because of the same fact!

Can remeber when i was out there some immigrant ship was on fire and drifting not too far away from OZ they put the fire out and towed it back wher eit came from. No messing over there.

 

Hell i even got deported from the place for overstaying my work visa by a few months.

This whole issue is not something that is ever going to go away. While there are poor countries and rich countries people will see a better life for themselves and try to get it. The people who go for it are the most adventurous and in terms of Darwinism its natural selection you could say.

 

However, the world can't cope with mass movements of people and there lies the big problem. How are we to deter large numbers? Its the problem thats never going to end.

Then perhaps they might stop!
