Blunderbust
I have had all the problems mentioned with all Hornady colours, I now use Winchester and I am on my 6th slab with not one problem.
Stealth Stalker
I've just had a pretty major problem this evening with these poxy blue tipped bullets! I'm current staring at my beloved CZ452 that has just blown up on me!! I'm thanking my lucky stars that I'm able to stare at it actually, because the explosion that happened to detonate a further 2 live rounds in the magazine has completely destroyed my rifle! Not a happy bunny SS

malkiserow
I mostly use blue tip Hornady and they have been very reliable for me. I love this little round as a mid range rabbit gun and short range fox gun.

Dougy
SS you were lucky not to have hurt yourself there. As far as "who pays" there have been umpteen claims made regarding these issues.
Stealth Stalker
That was gonna be my next question, reckon I have a claim? The rifle & ammo are going to my local gun shop where I bought the rounds first thing in the morning!
mick miller
Is that case head separation on the chambered round. Glad you're okay - a very lucky escape. First port of call, the ammunition importers, I believe that's Edgar Brothers.
team tractor
Ooooo nasty. Was it fired with one stuck up the spout?
Stealth Stalker
Hi Mick Yeah, case head separation that's now welded to the bolt face.
mick miller
Was there a click-no bang beforehand? I suspect not. This is the trouble with mass loading this particular cartridge. In small cases any deviation in the volumetric charge causes quite large changes in pressures and velocities. A lot of us have now had the 'squib', the click-no bang, round that results in a bullet a few inches into the rifling and now this. This isn't the first time I've seen a shattered hmr picture posted though. I wonder if this is as a result of either an under or over charge? Either way, I'm very glad that you are uninjured and that other than losing your pride and joy, unharmed. Please keep us posted with how you get on, I for one am genuinely interested to see what the other parties say.
Mentalmac
Lucky escape there Stealth Stalker, hope you are alright - bet that made a bang and a half. Hopefully you get a claim in somewhere to get your rifle repaired. As said on this thread already, I ended up moving to Winchesters and haven't had any problems and less miss fires too. mick miller
That is until you get a **** batch of those. They're all made in the same way, in the same factory, to the same standards, checks and processes.
Stealth Stalker
I've just gone through all my remaining Hornady 17 v max ammo, using the very scientific thumb nail round the bullet neck & out of 175 rounds 30 have split necks
Rimfireboy
That's bad SS. Was there a misfire before the blow up? I'm off to check my rounds now. Glad you weren't injured fella.
mick miller
Not sure the split neck was responsible, that's just a result of the cold-forming manufacturing process.
Dougy
The rifle will or should be replaced FOC. I think it's Edgar Brother's that will sort it out. No doubt someone will shout up in a minute or 2.
tweedledee
Surely it's up to user to check barrel free from obstruction?

Stealth Stalker
Took the rifle, blown cases and the 30 rounds with split necks to my local gun shop & they were horrified! Got straight on to Edgar Bros & they've asked for it all to be sent back to them, so we will see what the outcome is. The gun shop incidentally have seen 2 similar incidents!!
