evening all ,

well tonight I thought I would have another look around one of my permissions that butts unto another mate of mines land , now I know he has a lad that does a bit of foxing on his land and I think he goes with him from time to time and in NO way am I calling his efforts , however after seeing how the dog fox I shot last week I think they have been taking pot shots at them well out of range and its been a bit of a nightmare trying to call them in , they are so blooming lamp shy its unreal , anyway like I say tonight I popped out for a scan about and picked up a pair of eyes , I tried calling it in but it just DID NOT WANT TO KNOW , it was what seemed a mile off and would not play ball what so ever when all of a sudden it bolted along the drain at the end of the field and made it to the other side so I jumped in the van and had to drive 2 miles right around to another farm and flank it , well I to to the other side and to be honest I thought it would have cleared off , but no it was right at the bottom of this field , I would say about 400 yrds , well I started to call it in and to be fair it started to respond quite well , then it just sat there , now I must point out I do know how deep this field is as back in the summer I used it as a bit of a range , so I know the backstop and the lay on the land like the back of my hand ,

after nearly half hr calling he came in a bit , now I hummed and arred for what felt like a lifetime , I knew he was NOT going to commit anymore , so I had to make a choice , I gave him another call just to pick his eyes up and I ranged him around the 275 - 300 yrds mark , , he was just sitting there just looking at me , so sod it I'm having it , I had a 200 yrd zero so it didn't take much of a calculation , i waited a moment till he looked straight at me , i aimed right between the eyes and BANG !!

he went down like a sack of **** in fact i heard the thud all the way back from where i was stood , i knew it was a good shot and a long one too , so off i went and took the range finder with me , when i got there i pinged the van and i was not to far off , 306 yrds ,

on closer inspection the bullet struck straight in the top of the bib , , anyway anther one down ,

i know some have had further , but this is the longest shot i have ever had to do at night , if i did not have so much confidence in this set up i would not have even thought about it ,

Good result stevo, that is a long way on the lamp.

200 yrds at night is a very long shot . For me anyway . I cant and shouldnt take credit for it last night . It was a perfectly set up shot . A clear night with no wind sitting dead still on a field with no crop in it . Plus i pretty much knew the exact range . Someone with half my rifle skill could have made the shot . With out breaking a sweat .

Im just chuffed that the old fella never knew what hit him . Out like a light !

I think your to modest, that is a good shot under any conditions, sometimes you just know a shot feels right though and confidence in your kit helps make that. Good shooting.

thanks all ,

the bst of it is , I have my old nightforce scope that I was going to put on the rifle , however I cant get mounts to fit it unless I put a rail on and then high mounts , but it make it way too height and I'm unable to shoot it off hand as the comb height is too low , so I ended putting a 2 yr old bushnell banner 6 x 18 x 50 on as a temp fix while I decide what scope I'm going to put on it , the banner as amazing at night under the lamp so much so I'm in no rush to change it !!

Nice shot Stevo, :good:

306 that's not too far off the norm  (hang on I'd better check my average's) No its a fair way off at night  , I think the furthest I did last year was 280, Its not often I walk around my perms, I usually have a good idea where the Fox's are going to come from so I sit and wait. The advantage is I know the distances and get the Fox to go where I want them to go via callers most of the time, doesn't always work but most of the time it aint far off.

I only use a NM800 now so the range is not as good as the nightforce 170, I may use it though if there is the odd one that will just sit out at beyond the NM800 range.
