spandit
I ran into the wife of the farmer who had mentioned I could shoot on his land and said I was going to give him a call as I'd like something in writing. She said he wasn't in a good way at the moment because he got a shock from an electric fence... not just a standard low current livestock fence but a fault at the transformer that had electrified his entire stock fence & threw him across the field when he got close! He's back home now but not in a good way... :O
Dave-G
That's a ****** if its true - or it might be a bit of a put off perhaps. I'd leave it a few weeks and try again but be prepared for a knock back.
spandit
No, I think it's genuine. I might drop in and see him on the way home...
johnphilip
They are very powerfull i rent a cottage on a farm. I have one on two sides of the garden. A couple of years ago me and the wife were renewing the felt on the shed roof. She came down the ladder and her backside touched the fence, bless her i have never seen anyone go back up a ladder so fast. We joke about it now, but it hurt like hell at the time. You should pop around and see the farmer and see how he is doing. So farmers can get a bit lonely and like to chat with people. I hope he is going to be ok. spandit
A normal electric fence for livestock is around 6,000 volts but very low current - my energiser runs off a mobile phone style charger. A pole mounted transformer puts out many hundreds of amps - it's current that kills. Also, my fence pulses at about 1Hz so you have a chance to let go should you grab it. If he'd grabbed his fence I've no doubt he'd be dead. He was only investigating why there was a dead squirrel and fox next to it. Scary stuff. kent
If an electric fence is so dangerous and I have never come across one like that Then it's already illegal under a stack of legislation not least leaving a man trap. Hse? You simply couldn't get it through a reasonable risk assessment surely
spandit
It wasn't designed like that! It was a fault with the mains network & he'll be suing them...

spandit
To clarify, the 20kV mains transformer on the power network is apparently to blame. The fence was not due to be electrified in any way
gduk
I would put a bottle of Whisky on his door step with a note, if it's a bluff knock back you may win him over, if it's true it wont do you any harm at all (you might get one back someday) good insurance policy and it wont cost much!! spandit
I spoke to him today and I've no reason to doubt he's suffering - after all, I ran into his wife months after speaking to him about shooting so doubt she would have remembered to bluff. I'm going round to see him tomorrow anyway. Think I'll leave the booze behind as I imagine he's on quite a lot of painkillers
Guest topshot_2k
Might be worth offering to help out around farm if you can spare the time. Might secure the shooting deal
rodp
Might be worth offering to help out around farm if you can spare the time. Might secure the shooting deal Damned good idea, I've yet to meet a farmer who turns down free labour Seriously though, it shows you don't want something for nothing, which is always good.
