kingsy18
Up for 223 with varmint barrel can,t make my mind up between haenel jaeger, tikka t3 or browning eclipse.First two have 20 inch barrels ,browning has 24 inch barrel would there be much velocity lost between the 20 inch and 24 in ch barrels
robbiep
It's been tested quite a few times. Here is one set : http://rifleshooter.com/2014/04/223-remington5-56-nato-velocity-versus-barrel-length-a-man-his-chop-box-and-his-friends-rifle/ You look to be losing roughly 100 fps going from 24 to 20. zx10mike
i would worry more about which would be the better rifle with good accuracy potential rather than fps ,tikka gets my vote
spandit
I'd agree. If you're worried about 100fps then it's the wrong calibre for the job...
soother223
Look at twist rates also! Think the t3 has a better twist which will allow you to use heavier bullets if you wish to!
Savhmr
For a good all round .223, twist rate, barrel quality and action matter far more than barrel length. I don't personally like Brownings. I don't like the build or triggers. My vote would be the T3 every time. Quality barrel, smooth action, very accurate rifle and available in two twist rates. Older ones are 1/12 and newer T3s are 22 inch barrels in 1/9 twist able to stabilise rounds up to 75-80 grains from 50 grains. The tighter twist offers advantages of a more varied bullet choice and if target shooting, extends useable range by allowing heavier bullets with higher BCs to be used. Don't get hung up on barrel length. Remember that velocities can and are slightly extended if a moderator is fitted as this has the effect of lengthening the barrel in terms of extending the length that the propellant acts on the bullet. A good vid review on the T3 in 1/12 .223 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIJghuIHbes This chap shoots 1 inch groups at 250yds using his T3 with 50g Hornady V-max driven by Viht N133 powder. Our very own Activeviii of this parish I think recently came close to (or bettered) that with his T3 .223.
Dougy
What do you want to use it for Long range stuff or just general pest control Also what's your budget, if it's main reason will be long range stuff think about a semi custom job, but you will need to budget for around £1,100.00 for that. andrew f
tikka or a Cz Kevlar would be my choice
activeviii
Dougy has the nail. What will the 223 be used for. What is long range to you. What's your budget. Tikka, out of the box, is one of the best factory rifles there is. Very few manufacturers offer the sub moa group out of the box.
tbox
not in .223 but I love my tikka!

rjimmer
Look at twist rates also! Think the t3 has a better twist which will allow you to use heavier bullets if you wish to! The T3 with a faster twist is to special order(.223 Super Varmint), as is the longer barrel and set trigger. The longer barrels are not factory threaded and the warranty is void as soon as you get it done, so make sure it shoots before having it threaded, I'm sure it will. kent
Without picking holes in anyone I am beginning to suspect those that won't are largely driver error. Let's face it we know how to make bolt action rifles and there are few if any secretion the manufacturers processes I am talking 100 yards here
